Year 11 Kareenga Prison Excursion

On Friday the 10th of August the Year 11 Psychology students made their way to Karreenga Prison to meet with the prisoners and guards to discuss what lead them to commit crime, the impact on their families, prison life and whether the prison system is really a form of rehabilitation.

We were fortunate enough to meet seven inmates to discuss these issues. The prisoners stories were very insightful and relevant to teenage life. The guards were able to shed light on these issues in a different angle.

Tay-lah Ferguson“It’s ok to say you’re busy (even when you are not) to help you stay out of trouble”

Konrad Taua’a “You’re not more important than the person next to you”

Zainab Hussainpoor“Drugs are the cause of most crimes”

Ana Luca“People deserve a second chance”

Overall, the students felt that this was an eye opening experience and were able to take something away from it.

HPSC and RGPS – School Improvement Expo

Throughout Term 1 the Year 12 VCAL students meet with a select group of students from River Gum Primary School to focus on the topic of ‘School Improvement’. The students worked in groups deciding on a specific focus area of the topic. They were required to work with the primary school students to create a presentation on their topic, that would appeal to a primary school audience. After many weeks of meeting, the students were able to present at an expo where all of the River Gum students attended. The expo was a great success and all students upheld the school values and represented Hampton Park with distinction.

After the expo the students from River Gum who were involved in the program needed to be recognized. The VCAL students attended their assembly on Monday 14th August to present them with certificates of appreciation for the hard work they put in. Our students had the daunting task of having to address the entire primary school at the assembly. In short, they were all amazing! They spoke clearly and it was a joy to see them interact with the students in this manner. A huge congratulations to all of the students involved.
