Assistant Principals

Welcome back to all students, staff and families for another wonderful year at HPSC.  In addition, a very big welcome to all new students, including our 206 Year 7 students entering secondary schooling for the first time.

Our start to the year has been filled with exciting opportunities for our students.  All Year 7 students spent their first few days at HP working in our special program called Building Learning Power.  This program has been specially designed for our students and focuses on developing their understandings and skills as learners across all areas.  Students have the opportunity to work both independently and in teams to explore how they learn best, how to work with others and how to set themselves up for success as secondary school students.  As part of this program, our Year 7 and 8 students engaged with sessions with guest speaker Darren Pereira which focused on key concepts to support their lifelong learning including resilience, having a growth mindset and showing grit or determination when faced with challenges.  Darren also presented to our parent and carer community, with over 160 people coming in to hear his key messages about how best to support young people in their educational journey.

Alongside all of this, we held our first whole school assembly on Monday 4th February.  Our key focus was ‘The Pursuit of Excellence’ and this event gave students and staff the opportunity to hear from a range of speakers on this topic as well as reflect on what excellence means to them.

Our 2018 Dux, Gochika Jeyanthan, recorded a video message for our HPSC community which shared some key insights into her learning journey and ways she pursued, and achieved excellence.  Other speakers included student Peer Support Leaders and even two Year 7 students who were very brave to get up in front of over 1300 people and share their reflections on their first few days at the College.  A very big effort was made by our student leaders who, after being formally introduced to the whole College community, lead the remainder of the assembly with great aplomb.

Finally, our College will have a student-free day on Friday, February 22nd.  This day is very exciting for all staff at HP, with internationally acclaimed presenter Dylan Wiliam coming to our College for a whole day of professional learning focused on formative assessment.  Dylan Wiliam is Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at University College London. In a varied career, he has taught in inner-city schools, directed a large-scale testing programme, served a number of roles in university administration, including Dean of a School of Education, and pursued a research programme focused on supporting teachers to develop their use of assessment in support of learning.  We will have members of our network of schools joining us for this exciting day and look forward to seeing how the learning staff get from the day translates to practice in the classroom to improve the outcomes for all learners at Hampton Park.

I am pleased to advise that for students an staff, it has been a positive start to the 2019 school year. Opportunities for learning beyond the classroom are plentiful, with our Year 12 students recently returning from a very successful Year 12 Camp, the upcoming whole school Swimming Carnival to be held at Waverly Aquatic Centre on Monday March 4th, the commencement of the Year 7 Transition Camps from Monday 25th March, and the interschool sporting competitions throughout the term.

As Wayne has mentioned, it is very important to ensure that students travel safely to and from school. Students need to be alert at all times and must be mindful of the fact that they represent onto only themselves but the Hampton Park Secondary College community. Therefore, student conduct, wearing the correct and complete college uniform, as well as positive interaction with members for the broader community, is important. BY now, all students should have the correct and complete college uniform, as well as a personal computer. in extreme cases, temporary arrangements may be made through communication with the relevant Sub-School Learning Leader.

As part of the HPSC vision of the pursuit of excellence within our richly diverse community, the college recently celebrated the Lunar New Year as part of our multicultural educational program. students and staff were encouraged to wear something red, and they participated in origami workshops, colouring competitions and shared a morning tea together.
