Growth in Learning

Year 10 Work Experience 2023

Wheelers Hill Secondary College values links between school and industry and one way it does this is by offering Year 10 students the opportunity to undertake a work experience placement in a field of their choice.

All Year 9 students attended an “Introduction to Work Experience” presentation on Wednesday 7th Decemberwhere they learnt about the program, its benefits and how to get the most out

of their placement.  Students were even lucky enough to hear from two Year 10 students who took part in the program this year – Hannah Wright & Shay Coxhead. Hannah & Shay shared their experience of what it was like to undertake their placement of choice and what they gained out of it. Their presentation was very insightful and inspiring and so I would like to thank them both for giving up their time to speak our Year 9s.

Work experience is a short- term placement of secondary school students with employers to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located. It provides students with the valuable opportunity to:

  • Develop employability skills
  • Explore possible career options
  • Understand employer expectations
  • Increase their self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence

Students link with employers primarily to observe and learn – not to undertake activities which require extensive training or expertise.

Year 10 Work Experience

Year 10 Work Experience for 2023 is fromMonday 19th June – Friday 23rd June 2023

All Year 10 students are expected to participate in this valuable program.  I strongly recommend that Year 9 students commence their placement search from now or over the school holidays to avoid missing out on an experience that they really want.  Due to COVID19 and workplaces having more ‘remote working arrangements’ placements are harder to secure, hence the need to commence this important job search as early as possible.

Remember, securing a ‘meaningful/highly sort after’ placement is competitive with several other schools also having their work experience during the same time.  Students will be supported by myself and their Year 10 Futures teachers with regards to this program, however the responsibility of finding a placement rests with students.

Work Experience Kits 2023 will be emailed to Year 9 students and families by the end of the year.  The Kit contains helpful information on how you can get started with finding a placement, what paperwork needs to be completed and by when.

Further details on 2023 Work Experience Program will also be delivered during Year 10 Futures classes next year.  In the meantime, here are some suggested opportunities to assist students with commencing their search–

I wish Year 9 students all the best with securing a meaningful work experience placement for 2023😊
