Women in Trade Industry Experience

Last week a small group of super keen students donned their hi-vis vests and work boots to attend the Women in Trade Industry Day at The Gordon, East Geelong Campus. The students were involved in tasters in Electrical, Carpentry & Automotive, treated to a buffet lunch and went on a site visit to Brockman Engineering in Norlane.

During each taster, the students were given the opportunity to get a hands-on experience and develop practical skills relevant to the trade. In construction they made a wooden box, in electrical they put together a simple motor and a spinning dancer, and in auto they learnt how to change a tyre. Western Heights was lucky enough to have two Year 10 students – Stevie Allen & Ryah Crothers – be recognised and awarded prizes for their effort, skill and enthusiasm in automotive and construction. The girls both got their own hard hats and brand new tool kits, and should be very proud of their passion being acknowledged by the Gordon staff.

Congratulations to Stevie Allen, Jorja Cookson, Ryah Crothers, Zahlia Foley, Keshena Kinkaid & Ella Brown for being brave enough to explore their pathway options and embark on a potential journey into the trade industry.

ALUMNI

We were delighted to welcome back past student Jack Herd from the Class of 2014 to speak to the Year 11 Art Making & Exhibiting students on Tuesday. Jack is a young artist who had just held his first solo exhibition last year.

Jack was generous in talking about his artistic style, inspirations, methods, materials and journey, which includes studying art at uni. He even brought in some of his pieces and works in progress to show the class. And while setting up, we also unearthed an old Year 12 painting of his in the classroom cupboard, which promptly went on display too!

Jack encouraged the students to find their inspirations and style, experiment and, importantly, enjoy the process. Other great tips included:

  • keep a scrapbook and take notes of things that inspire you
  • take breaks to refresh your mind during the creative process
  • the ability to communicate your artistic intentions will help you deal with critique
  • when organising an exhibition, consider the placement of your artworks and put effort into marketing the event
  • studying art at university is a great way to develop your craft and meet new friends

Thank you to Jack for joining us!

If you are a former Western Heights College student (including Bell Park HS, Bell Park SC and Geelong West TS), please get in touch with our alumni program at alumni@whc.vic.edu.au

JOBS BOARD

Guzman y Gomez is opening a new store in Leopold in June and are looking to employ 50-70 staff members for the opening.

We love what we do, serving affordable fresh food with great customer service. We also love bringing in students with little to no experience and training them to serve customers, build rapport, work with food, follow food safety and hygiene guidelines, and grow their interpersonal and workplace skills.
