Sam at Work Experience
Year 11 formal at Siena College
On the 24th of March, Siena College held their annual Year 11 formal. Debbie-Rose (left) who is attending Siena College attended, accompanied by Pauline (right) who is a Year 11 MITS student at Kingswood College student. Pauline accompanied Debbie-Rose to share this experience together.
Both students were treated to new outfits and a hair and make-up session from a volunteer from MECCA cosmetics.
Pauline and Debbie-Rose had an amazing night and can happily say this was a highlight of their year!
Indigenous Fashion Exhibition at Melbourne Museum
Our Alumni girls got to explore the Melbourne Museum and feast their eyes on some fabulous pieces that where on display for the Indigenous Fashion Exhibition.
A lot of the students fell in love with some of the gowns and wished they had them in their wardrobe.
After having a long look at the exhibition, the students then got to look at the dinosaurs that were close by, which was also a favorite.
Year 8 assembly at Camberwell Girls Grammar School
Last week we had 2 of our year 8 students, Emma and Olivia, present to their year 8 cohort about introducing Rugby to the Girls Sport Victoria (GSV) competition that is seen within many schools across the state.
Both students took the initiative to write a proposal to their school Principal and presented this to Mrs Dunwoody, then both students presented this proposal to GSV leadership, and they now have Rugby approved as a new sport in the GSV competition!
This is a huge achievement by Olivia and Emma. We look forward to hearing how the teams progress and watching some games.
Yaluk Langa Community Day at Heide Museum
Our alumni students enjoyed a day out at the Heide Museum of Modern Art for their Yaluk Langa (River’s Edge) Community Day.
The day involved learning about the space which is a collaborative garden project that has been developed by the traditional owners of the land, the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and the team at the Heide Museum.
The students watched traditional dances performed by the Djirri Djirri dancers, traditional Smoking Ceremony, participated in art making activities and saw scar trees and artifacts that were held on the site. They then enjoyed some food from Mabu Mabu.
A great day out enjoying some culture in the heart of Melbourne.
Work Experience
Work experience is a great way for alumni to gain knowledge, skills, and valuable insight into the world of work, understand the expectations in a workplace, improve their chances of employment, and support or confirm future career choices.
Sam Warrior recently completed a week at Kane Constructions ‘Consider Construction’ program. During his placement, Sam experienced life in the corporate environment, trades, safety briefings and site walk, and attended project planning meetings. He was even fortunate enough to spend a day onsite at the MITS boarding house under construction at 371 Church Street, Richmond.
Consider Construction is a part of Kane’s wider strategy to increase diversity within the construction industry. Sam’s placement on the program has confirmed this industry pathway for him.

Partner School events
MITS partner school Parade College invited the Yidaki Boys to play at the unveiling of a stunning artwork 'Budji Djinang' created by Indigenous Artist and Parade College student Marley Stewart.
It was the second time the boys have performed at Parade College, the first being the 2022 end of year school assembly. The boys are amazing and there’s no hint of stage fright. Thank you Jayden (MITS teacher and proud Wonnarua man) for your leadership and mentoring of the boys.
Sports and Culture
Summer sport was the call for term one and MITS alumni are involved in many sports at club level and at their Partner Schools including basketball, touch rugby and of course footy. A whole new vocabulary comes with sports, and terms like ‘ankle breaker’ and ‘goosey’ can be heard around MITS!
Pre-season footy training also began and everyone here at MITS is looking forward to the coming season.
Peggy Martin and Kendyn Brown are part of the St Kilda Next Generation Academy. Both alumni proudly carry their culture with them every day and share their culture to uplift others.
Although this photo of Kendyn playing the Yidaki is from 2022 it is a great example of our alumni walking in two worlds.
School Camps
School Camps, although challenging, provide great opportunities for students to explore their inner strength and resilience. As well as individual challenges, MITS alumni work in teams to tackle sometimes unfamiliar environments, and activities such as rock climbing, cycling, kayaking, navigation and the like. It is great for the students to be out on Country and experience Victoria’s natural wonders.
Kingswood College camp was held at the Mount Arapiles-Tooan State Park and alumni Nickiesha, Ciara, and Lesharnie had literally made it to the top of the mountain!
St Kevin’s MITS alumni in Year 10 and 11 are on camp too. Here are Leo and Adam having pitched their tent whilst enjoying cycling on the Goldfields Track. This is a nice lead-in to the return home for holidays.
