Year 11 Camp

 LAKE DEWAR

Year 11 CAMP

After a couple of years of camp hiatus, Lake Dewar Adventure Camp was back! 90 students and 9 staff bussed their way to Myrniong, Victoria.

With a student itinerary filled with adventure-based activities such as Archery, Canoeing, Dual Flying Fox, Kayaking, Kick Biking, Pedal Karting and an Amazing Race Challenge, there was little opportunity for down time.

But when there was, students were given the chance to master their skills in table tennis, billiards and a large variety of games/board games.

Some students even took the initiative and created very competitive indoor volleyball and badminton matches amongst cabin groups!

Students participated in activities that encouraged personal growth inspired by the beautiful surrounds of Myrniong and Werribee Gorge.

We truly hope students saw camp as an opportunity to build their resilience and social skills - engaging with and trusting each other in blind canoeing and other challenging group activities.

Some students challenged themselves with new experiences that felt overwhelming initially but once encouraged by each other, were taking flight on the dual flying fox embracing their fears and realising their strengths.

Whilst at camp, students also took part in a Future Me presentation run by Mr Malcolm. Students were presented with a wealth of information to help navigate their VCE and VM pathways moving forward this year and into the next.

Students were also given the opportunity to spend the last day focusing on the importance of mindfulness through a nature walk with Miss Rehak, taking in the beautiful surrounds of the Werribee Gorge. A sincere thanks to both teachers.

The theme for Year 11’s this year is Connectedness. A sense of belonging is important, and this camp is only one of the many opportunities Year 11’s will have to build and forge strong and respected communities with each other, the school and the wider school community.

We hope students came back and shared their positive experiences with families and loved ones. A sincere thank you to all the staff that gave up time away from their very own families to ensure that the year 11’s were able to make memories that will no doubt last a lifetime.

I think that the year 11 Camp will be one of the most memorable things about this year. Looking back over an exceptional few days gives us all laughs.

They way every student was able to accept and bond with each other was excellent.

One of the most talked about things was jumping in the lake regardless of if it was in the morning or night. Playing games and just having laughs with friends after lights out was just something else. The experience was one in a lifetime.

From strengthening my friendships to participating in fun activities and competitive competitions, I would say I had a great time at camp.

My group and I had a lovely mentor who was very encouraging and made us feel extremely welcome.

Being the first camp back from COVID lockdown but being the last camp for the rest of the school years, I am so glad I went, and I would say that it's a camp that shouldn't be missed :)

Camp was one of the happiest and exciting experiences we had this year so far. Not only that, but during camp was probably the most social and active we've been all year.

Camp, Lake Dewar Lodge, was full of nature, had great views and the staff were really nice and helpful. There were so many interesting and fun activities.

We did kayaking and caving on the first and third days of camp. We also had an assembly about careers with a bonfire later that day, and a mindfulness nature walk on the last day.

We had the Amazing Race on the second day, and we loved it so much. It was competitive and tiring but very enjoyable. We did activities like archery, go karts, canoeing, puzzle games etc, but our favourite activity out of all was the flying fox.

On the second day, we also had a trivia night, it was very chaotic but entertaining! The conference area we were in was so nice.  There was a lot of stuff to do such as pool, pingpong, soccer table and a lot of board games. We also played basketball, volleyball, hide and seek, tag etc during our free time.

The cabins and the bathrooms were very nice. Last but not least, the food there was amazing and it was a lot better than I expected. Overall, our camp experience was very memorable and incredible, and we miss it so much.
