Multicultural Students Activities
April 2023
The Geelong Karens Youth Community (GKYC) coordinated this event with the support of the Geelong Karen Community Association (GKCA) and we would like to express our gratitude to Northern Bay College for allowing participants of our community to use the campus' facilities at Goldsworthy throughout the day. This is our second event and it would not be possible without Northern Bay generosity.
The goal of such a day is to unite and inspire Karen's youth to participate in community activities while also raising money for local causes like helping IDPs and our Karen people who are still left in the camp/Karen state. The Karen community are some 5 million strong and hope one day to have their own State. The represent only 7% of the Myanmar population and have been subject to many years in danger from various governments there.
On these special Youth Days numerous members of the Northern Bay staff participated and demonstrated their love and support for our community as well as for their former and current students who took part in these activities, including CollegePrincipalScott Diamond, Steven 'Stoofa' Lewry (SEED Director ), Janelle Hearn (CALD worker), Belthrand Habiyakare(CALD Community Liaison Officer), and Benjamin Lowery (SEED / SPORTS cooordinator).
It would not have run so well either were it not for the participation of current students from all different cultures.

The Youth Sports Day was a busy active day, serving left and right. In the stall I worked at was handling drinks like milk tea.
I was responsible for making the milk teas, in charge of money and taking orders, including cooking roti bread spread with either condensed milk or chocolate which is divine in my opinion.
My favourite part was trying the milk teas I made for myself during the shift when it was not as busy. Overall, the adults and other students I worked with were understanding, moreover hard working. I enjoyed participating in this type of activities, involving teamwork and multi-tasking.

The entire youth sports day was filled with such positivity!
My friends and I participated in the volleyball aspect and loved every second of it. It was so great to see so many teams collaborating together and just enjoying the day. Although the weather didn’t seem the best, nobody let it effect them negatively as you could tell that the vibe was pretty relaxed. I personally had a wonderful time at the event, being surrounded by such a welcoming and inclusive community is very comforting as I am pretty new to their entire situation. As College Captain it was important to me to get to know many of our students better.
To say that this community organised event was amazing would be an understatement as it’s so much more than that! It involves so many different people of the community, culture, etc, which allows for so many benefits including youth and community. Youth benefits, such as participation, collaboration, communication and team building we all key points of the event. Whereas benefits for the community included, increased involvement from existing participants as well as new ones, and positive outcomes. This is truly something everybody should take the chance to try; being part of something so inclusive is something I personally see as important and as it is a chance to open up just that little bit more.

I like how everyone was participating and working together collaboratively in the activities at the youth sport event last Saturday. The weather was not the best but at least we had fun and meet new people from different places.
This year there were a spread of Harmony Day activities across the College and at the P-8 Campuses they were tied in with the Community Fun Event.
