Student illness exclusion requirements

Parents and carers, below is a general reminder of the conditions around which students with common illnesses can attend school. A gastro/diarrhoeal illness of unknown source is the most common in schools. There is gastro going around at the moment and it is important that we keep everyone as healthy as possible.

Excerpt from our Infectious diseases policy:

Schools have a legal responsibility to help manage infectious diseases in their facilities. Schools also have an important role to play in supporting the prevention and control of transmission of infectious diseases through abiding by legislated requirements for school exclusion, infectious disease notification and immunisation status recording.

Exclusion of a child with an infectious disease: (primary school students) Children with certain infectious diseases, and children who have been in contact with certain infectious diseases, are required to be excluded from school for a specified period. Infectious diseases are diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi; the diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

The DHHS School exclusion table identifies which infectious diseases require exclusion and for what period. Diarrhoeal/Gastro illness: Exclude until there has not been vomiting or a loose bowel motion for 24 hours.

Primary schools must be aware of the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009 exclusion requirements and must not allow a child to attend school if:

They have been informed that the child is infected with an infectious disease that requires exclusion as described in the School exclusion table.

They have been informed that a child has been in contact with a person with an infectious disease as described in the School exclusion table.

Media restrictions and photos of school students

Parents and carers, please be aware that photos taken of students at sporting and school events are subject to specific family directions placed on the sharing of images. It is therefore extremely important to be aware of who is in the photo and whether there are media restrictions upon them. If you are not sure, it is wiser to not share a photo. To share  you must have permission from the parents of all the students within.

Excerpt from our Photographing, filming and Recording students policy:

School performances, sporting events and other school approved activities

Newham Primary School permits parents/carers, students and invited guests to photograph, film or record school performances, sporting events and other school-approved activities. Newham Primary School requests that parents/carers, students and invited guests who photograph, film or record school activities only do so for their own personal use and do not publish the images in any form, including on social media, without the prior consent of persons whose children also appear in the images. Neither the school nor the Department own or control any images of students taken by parents/carers, students or their invited guests at school activities.

Please visit the school website for our full policy on Photography

Winter weather equals hungrier students

As the weather turns colder we are finding more students are presenting at the office looking for extra food. This is above and beyond those who have sincerely forgotten their lunch and for whom we haven't been able to contact a parent. Could parents please consider supplying students with extra food for the day (especially checking what your child has packed for themselves, if they make their own lunch).  If you are not sure if your child is eating it all, not eating enough and is still hungry, please contact your child's classroom teacher for more information as well as chatting to your child about their eating requirements for each day.
