Author Study

Last week students participated in a whole school Author Study with our author in focus being Claire Saxby. Claire is a famous Australian author who has written some wonderful nonfiction story books around Australian history and its involvement in world wars - making a great connection to ANZAC Day and its significance.  Students were immersed in many of her titles and different genres throughout the week and were able to gain a deep understanding and connection through illustrations and text.

We look forward to sharing a video with you all in the coming weeks of some of the highlights from across the week.

BULLDOGS READ UPDATE

Our Bulldogs Read Students have had a busy first week back at school.

Last Friday, all 18 students involved in the program visited the Sebastopol Library where they had an opportunity to be involved in a Q & A session with the Ballarat Libraries Children’s Librarian, they had a tour and also had an opportunity to borrow from the library using their newly acquired library membership cards. This was a  wonderful opportunity for students and for many, was their first time visiting a public library. Hopefully, this visit will encourage future visits and borrowing to encourage their interest in reading.

The second exciting opportunity that the students had the opportunity to be involved in this week, was free tickets for themselves and family members to the Bulldogs v Hawthorn game at Marvel Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  We had 9 families take up the offer for free tickets. For many of these students it was their first time at an AFL game and gave them the opportunity to see some of the players that they have been engaging with over recent months through the program in action on the field, which of course they all loved!  Adding to the experience was the fact that the Bulldogs won the game!

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open, and we are excited to be participating. The PRC application offers a range of exciting features, including:

  • access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
  • a modern user-friendly interface
  • rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
  • the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge.

All students will be issued with a username and password this week. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher or Nicole Phillips.
