Art

Welcome back to Term 2 in the Art room. We have been getting explorative and a little messy already by painting up a storm! Prep students have begun using paint to colour mix and using a range of tools that aren’t paintbrushes to create unusual marks and textures. These explorations will be used to create new collage work in the coming weeks.

Grade one students are also exploring painting and alternate painting tools in a response to a picture story book. I can’t wait to see these artworks completed as students are experimenting with using their hands to print the details of the story’s characters.

In Grade 2 students this week have created stunning artworks of Australian wildflowers by also using paint and different tools to create their work. We used soft pastels, a medium students are quite familiar with from last term, to create a background before using tools such as cardboard, scrunched up paper, bottle-brushes or cotton tips to create the textures and details of the flowers. I am so in love with the end results!

Our Grade 3 & 4 artists have started the term exploring the beautiful colours we observe in Autumn leaves. They have drawn, rubbed and painted leaves using water-colour paint and oil pastels to show the colours of the season.

And lastly our senior artists have been very experimental by also painting with tools that are not brushes. They have been inspired by a storybook that has illustrations created onto cardboard which they decided had a message about how art doesn’t need fancy materials to be interesting. The book is called ‘The Patchwork Bike’ illustrated by Van T Rudd and it’s well worth checking out if you see it at the library. Students have also been introduced to the artwork of Australian landscape artist Fred Williams and have been inspired by his use of textured paint, light and colour.

Given that so much painting is taking place at the moment, if your child does not have an art smock yet, please can you get them one to protect their uniforms?

We’ve started Art Club and I’m so lucky to be assisted by our Art Captain Raunaq. This week students explored observational still life drawing and other artists chose to learn embroidery with Mrs E. We had 2 very creative groups working during Thursday lunchtime.
