Blue Edge Program
What Is Blue Edge?
Blue Edge is a program that took place every Tuesday and Thursday during term one. It included about 20 year 8 and year 9 students. It was run by local members of Victoria Police, who made frequent appearances throughout the term, and members of the Blue Light program. It consisted of an hour and a half split into two halves: a fitness session and group activities and workshopping session.
What Did We Achieve through Blue Edge?
Fitness: Throughout the fitness program, the blue edge group participated in fitness activities led by Lou, a fitness coach who demonstrated good ways to stay active and fit. The fitness sessions were either directed by Lou, or followed a training AI that instructed us. As well as base-level things such as running and weights, we were also given access to gym equipment to broaden our fitness knowledge. Examples of this include battle ropes and medicine balls. Students had the opportunity to pick the soundtrack of music to the sessions. We achieved a higher level of strength and fitness through these activities, as well as some team building.
Workshopping: The remainder of the blue edge session was spent with Cass, another instructor. After a delivered lunch, blue edge members would sit in a circle and discuss an idea. We covered many topics such as stereotypes, mental health, peer pressure and police. We also got the opportunity to interact with police members and query them about their jobs. During these sessions, members contributed ideas and participated in discussions. We learned how to see things from others’ point of view and that others’ opinions matter. Members were also exposed to topics they might not have had the chance to talk about before. These sessions helped to strengthen a sense of community.
The Longest Day
On Monday the 3rd of April, the year 8 and 9 students who participated in Blue Edge traveled to the Lady Northcote camp near Bacchus Marsh. There we took part in team-building activities, a ride on a giant swing and climbing on high ropes. These activities challenged us, but thanks to the Blue Edge program, we had all built upon our courage and determination and were ready to handle them!
In conclusion it was an interesting and enjoyable experience that we recommend to other students.
Thanks Police officers Wade, Yasmin and Erin, as well as Lou and Cass and also to all of the teachers who came along to help and participate regularly.
