Officer Update

A fabulous and busy start to 2023! So many wonderful events and great opportunities for our students to engage in over the last 10 weeks.

Our Year 9’s engaged with the Living Out Loud Health Promotion workshops facilitated from Fairfield Liverpool Youth Health Team covering topics including mental health, sexual health, consent, and healthy relationships. These workshops allowed for great conversations and extended their educational experiences.

Our students from Years 10 & 11 attended the Drug Education presentation by Johnny Nguyen from Inspire 180. Johnny shared his confronting journey and amazing life story of how he transformed from a stand over man to a loving husband, father, and youth mentor. We look forward to having Johnny come back and engage with our students in Years 9 & 12 in Term 2.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have attended workshops being delivered by Souths Cares. These workshops allowed students to enhance their creativity while connecting to culture. We can’t wait for Term 2 to see what Bianca and Nekaya have in store for our students.

We took several of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to Gandangara’s Community Gathering for National Close the Gap Day. The students were able to bring a non-Indigenous friend to share this wonderful event. It was a great occasion to be out in the community and connecting with culture. Jordyn Dumont from Year 12 won the major prize of one night’s accommodation at Mercure Wynard Hotel.

Our Year 7 & 8 students were fortunate enough to have Rhys Wesser from Souths Cares along with Blake Taaffe and Peter Mamouzelos from South Sydney Rabbitohs attend our school to deliver the Healthy Relationship workshop through Rabbitohs Health and Wellbeing Program. Students learnt about developing respectful relationships amongst their peers, and their wider circles. Students also grabbed the opportunity for some photos and autographs from the players.

Additionally, Year 8 students attended a workshop delivered by Western Sydney University Justice Clinic. The workshop provided the students with valuable information regarding consent and sexual cybercrime and the many laws around this topic. We have been very fortunate to partner with the Justice Clinic again this year to enhance our students’ educational experiences.

Our final workshop for Term 1 saw the start of the Haka Warrior Program with our Pasifika students engage with Blacktown PCYC. The first workshop kicked off with a strong presence of more than 60 students.  The program provides a holistic approach to promoting core values of unity, respect, resilience, self-worth and identity.

A huge thank you to Fairfield Liverpool Youth Health Service (NSW Health), Gandangara Local Aboriginal Land Council, Inspire 180, Souths Cares, Western Sydney University Justice Clinic and Blacktown PCYC for their continued support and opportunities created for all our students at James Busby High School.

Wishing you all a very Happy Easter and a safe holiday period. Looking forward to seeing you all fresh for Term 2.
