Year 7/8 Outdoor Ed Excursion

On Tuesday 4 April, The Year 7/8 Outdoor Education class headed to Phillip Island for a surfing lesson. The students were able to put the beach safety theory into practice such as identifying the rip currents of Smiths Beach. They also had an introductory surfing lesson.

Below are the thoughts of some participants:

Poppy Richards

I loved surfing - the cool, refreshing water and the kind and helpful coaches. Now I know how to catch a wave and stand up on the surfboard, I will definitely go surfing again. I really loved the feeling of standing up on the surfboard, riding on the waves, and feeling the wave push me along like a magic carpet. Smiths Beach was an ideal place to go for beginners, and the weather was beautiful that day.

The surfing was really fun to do because of the amount of time we were doing it was making it more enjoyable. Counting how many waves we were able to catch and stand up on was a fun little competition I had with a few other friends and I hope we will be able to do it next year too.

I personally loved the surfing because of how new it is to me at the start. I was doing quite bad but with the help of the trainers, I was able to stand on the board. The trainers were very watchful of us. When we could not do surfing properly, they would help us and made the person being helped able to do what they wanted to do.The long drive there was way worth it because we learned how to surf, which is an amazing thing to achieve.

I enjoyed the surfing excursion because we got to swim around and still collaborate with each other as well as trying something new. Everyone showed resilience by getting up after missing a wave or getting dunked which I liked. It was better fun when the instructors taught us how to stand up on the surfboards. Over, all thank you for taking us surfing it was so much fun.

Today I had a blast! Surfing was really fun. We all had a great time, and I would love to get a chance to do it again.  I got to spend time with my friends and take a day off from school. Everyone was encouraging which made the experience extra awesome. The bus trip was sooo long, but it was pretty fun. I loved surfing today and I am looking forward to keep surfing in the future.
