Debating - Round 2 and 3 Results

On Thursday 3rd of September, our 2020 debating teams competed in their second debate of the season. Due to COVID restrictions, all debates this year will be via Zoom! Dundas Gold Team (Evan H, Almira R, Gracie F, Clarice O and Clair L) and Dundas Black (Pamela W, Eliza D, Claire J, Yaelin K, Ryan B ) team both went up against Carlingford West Public School.

With the topic ‘We should ban primary school kids from having phones,’ Dundas Gold were arguing for the negative. With persuasive arguments and strong rebuttals, Dundas Gold were successful in winning their debate!

Dundas Black debated the topic ‘That debating should be compulsory for all Years 5&6’. They were arguing for the affirmative. With excellent voice and confidence, fantastic content and professional manner, Dundas Black was also successful in winning their debate.

What a fantastic second debate!

In the third and final round, on the 16th September, Year 6 (Dundas Gold) competed against Year 5 (Dundas Black), in front of their peers on Zoom! The topic was that schools should have a weekly mental health lesson covering things like meditation, yoga and mindfulness. Dundas Gold argued for the affirmative, with strong reasons about why mental health lesson would be a great idea. Dundas Black spoke about the other important things that teachers have to teach, and how there is not enough time to add these extra lessons.

The adjudicator was very impressed with both teams and thanked them all for such a ‘sophisticated debate’. She awarded the debate to the affirmative. Congratulations to Dundas Gold who will now represent our Zone in the next round of debates next term.

Our debating program at Dundas will be in very good hands next year with these very enthusiastic and determined year five students.
