Grade 5 Creative Writing Challenge

Twelve very happy students were given the opportunity to participate in a Creative Writing Challenge on Monday, 7 September.

During that time students were joined by author Lili Wilkinson to imagine settings, characters and plots inspired by the NGV art Collection. They planned, drafted and published a narrative story.

'The Creative Writing session, which was run by Lili Wilkinson, a famous author, was an amazing experience, and I feel extremely lucky to be able to go.

There were over 300 students and teachers from all over Victoria attending to learn how to improve writing. First, we learnt about taking inspiration from photos, and finding the bits to the photo that make you inspired and want to write something about.

To make characters and settings, and even the story, we looked at 4 pictures. After that, we answered 20 questions about our character and found a bit of in-depth knowledge of our characters, and we wrote it down. We then learnt about the 3 ways to end a story: all happy, all sad or the character gets something in the middle which is probably the better one.
I absolutely loved the Creative Writing session and I wish I could do it all over again!' -Emily M 5DM
