Civics lesson with MP Rebekha Sharkie
On Thursday 20 August, we had the privilege of hosting our local member of parliament, Ms Rebekha Sharkie. She taught a civics lesson to our Year 6/7s, discussing her role and taking the time to answer some of their questions.
It was a great opportunity to hear from someone who has personal experience of what parliament is like – and perhaps inspired some of our own minds to think about how we can make change in our own communities!
Some of the things we learnt included:
- The Queen is not allowed to set foot in the House of Representatives
- There is a designated media area in Parliament House
- There are 2700 clocks in Parliament House
- Politicians cannot have a say in the House of Representatives until they have done their own introductory speech.
