Our Little Scientists
On Friday 21 August, during our Pre-literacy and Discovery time, we had the privilege of being part of a LIVE video stream with a team of scientists from the Abyss Project, scuba diving in Sydney Harbour, and documenting the sealife and removal of rubbish they found.
The children were able to help the Scientist by recording their observations on a data sheet that were scanned and emailed back to the project as part of National Science Week. Here are just a few samples of the children's work!
What a fabulous and unique experience for them, that fitted so perfectly into our ongoing child-led inquiry topic “Under the Sea”
Excursion to Horeshoe Bay
On a Drizzily Thursday the Little Tyndalians jumped aboard the bus and headed South to Horseshoe Bay. Along the way we drove along Basham’s Beach, Middleton to see if the whales were out and about, however “They must be sleeping” one child stated.
We had our snack on the grass at Horseshoe Bay then walked along to Ladies Beach where the children frolicked in the rock pools hunting for small sea life, jumped the small waves lapping at the shore and gathered seaweed for the sand sculptured mermaid on the beach.
The children loved climbing the rocks until a friendly face poked its head up from the sea, dived down and swam in closer, to be met by the delightfully friendly seal that came right into the shallows to say “Hello”.
We stopped off for lunch at the Nature Playground at Goolwa where we played on the pirates ship and musical sculptures. As the bus drove us home we slowed down as we passed by the Aboriginal Canoe Tree where Mrs Downes explained how they carved out the canoe from trees.
