Michaelmas House News

Term Three has been a long, cold term with many students playing one or more winter sports. Many students have shown dedication with hours of training and fixtures, some with success. Rhiannon Williams-Jolley was in the winning hockey team, and Rosie Page and Natalie Heron were runners up. Grammar Seven and Grammar Eight played each other in the netball grand final. Ava Smith and Brianna Harris from Grammar Eight played against Rosie Page, Georgia Patterson and Jasmine Kuiper from Grammar Seven. Grammar Eight tried hard to peg back the ten-point deficit; however, were unable to do so, and Grammar Seven were victorious. Well done, girls!

Socialising

As adults, we know and recognise the importance of interaction with others to make sure that children have time away from their screens. Fortunately, most attend after school sport training commitments which have them out and about. At 4.30pm Monday to Thursday, boys hand in their technology and interact socially. Mostly, they head outside to the giant sand pit out the back of Michaelmas, play cards or board games, kick the footy, or ride on bikes and skateboards, or go to the cricket nets. Girls are more inclined to do some baking or mingle in rooms if they have no after school commitments.

Giant Jenga

We have a wonderful new creative addition to the house! The intention was to have Jenga as our activity for Boarding’s Got Talent; however, since Mr Colgate kindly made and presented it to the house prior to the boarding event, it has created lots of fun and skill to the many students who have enjoyed playing it. It will now be permanently available for use within boarding generally; however, there has been interest from other houses who want to have their own set on hand!

Birthdays

Late last month, Natalie Heron, Rosie Page and Rhiannon Williams-Jolley celebrated their birthdays within a week of each other and received their birthday gift. Hayden Leo, Finn Alvarez de Toledo and Reiley Allison also celebrated their special day within a few days of each other. We had a communal birthday cake as everyone had been fortunate to celebrate their special day within their own family.

In Closing

Peter and I, along with the wonderful staff in Michaelmas House, Mrs Baum and Ms Robertson, take this opportunity to wish all boarders and their families a happy and safe holiday and we look forward to continuing to be part of your child’s boarding journey for the remainder of the year.

Charlie

Charlie (Mr and Mrs Colgate’s grand fur child and one of the GSG therapy dogs) spends time in the boarding house and on Tuesday afternoons he comes to our Woodwork class. On Thursday morning he walks to school with us and attends homeroom, Period One and Period Two in Mrs Berryman’s class. We meet Mr Colgate at recess when he is on yard duty and he takes Charlie back to the boarding house. We enjoy taking Charlie to class and he enjoys going to school, too!

Leaders Report

Term Three has flown by this year. Everyone has really enjoyed playing their winter sports, whether it be soccer, hockey, AFL or netball, with quite a few of the Michaelmas boarders making it into the finals.

We tried something different this year with Boarding’s Got Talent, by having the individual houses hosting a country and its cuisine. We chose Australia which fortunately was an easier theme and we made delicious home-made sausage rolls and ‘frog in a pond’ which is just jelly in a cup with a Freddo frog! Everyone became involved in either cooking or decorating and setting up for the occasion. Mr Colgate made a giant Jenga game which was very popular. The new format was successful and hopefully may be repeated in future years.
