Curriculum

Selamat siang!

We are so proud of all of our Foundation Students for their engagement and hard work in Week 8! During the week, we introduced our 'Brain Breaks' board. This board is to further support students with their learning by providing some ideas for breaks between activities and throughout the day. It has been wonderful to see students engaging in both the Choosing Board and the Brain Breaks board this week. Please remember to take breaks between your learning, particularly as we are approaching the final two weeks of term 3!

Maths

Subtraction strategies were the focus of the week. Students were given the opportunity to use strategies to solve subtraction problems and even created their own 'Subtraction story' to solve! We look forward to sharing these subtraction stories among peers to solve next week! Throughout the week, students used strategies including 'acting out the problem', 'drawing the problem', 'split strategy' and 'jump strategy'. It was wonderful to hear students explain their learning through the voice recording and video recording features on Seesaw. Well done Foundation!

Literacy

We were blown away by the Foundation students’ imaginative discussions and writing in Literacy.  Students demonstrated the character strength of creativity by including imaginative ideas for their recount as well as when designing their 'dream cupcake'. Students continued to practise correctly forming their letters, having a go at sounding out new words and of course, remembering capital letters and full stops. The Discovery centre also focused on using images to enhance meaning, through our 'See, Think and Wonder' Chart as well as our Library Session with Mrs Smaller. The students came up with some very interesting ideas and predictions based on the images in texts. For Library, the students enjoyed reading 'When I grow up' and responded by sharing what they would like to be when they grow up! It appears we have some aspiring future teachers, policemen and women and even some pilots in the Discovery Centre!

A highlight of our week was the National Indigenous Literacy Day! We joined in the celebrations virtually and it has been fantastic to hear the Foundation students have rich discussions about the Indigenous texts that we continue to watch and read.

The Foundation Teachers have loved our Google Meet Sessions and continue to be impressed by the Discovery Centre's love of learning and perseverance when completing their work! We have two weeks left of Term 3 and we cannot wait for all of the amazing discussions and learning that will continue to take place in the next few weeks!

As you can see, the Foundation teachers and staff have been working hard to practice their codes. Don't forget to also practice your codes throughout the week to use in your writing! Do you know the codes in the pictures?

Have a wonderful week!

Student Voice

My highlight of the week was...

  • Arnab - "My Mum had a Happy Birthday! We ate cake and had so much fun"
  • Neve - "Talking to friends on Google Meet on the iPad!"
  • Harriet- "My highlight is spending time with the best little Brother"
  • Zoe - "The nice weather! I could enjoy it on the trampoline"
  • Dev- "I played cricket with my Dad and Brother!"
  • Tahlia- "Playing the Maths Game with my Mum - it was so fun!"

Reminders

  • You can access the codes folder to hear and practise the codes with your students' teacher.
  • 'Tuning in' and 'Challenge' tasks are optional. These are provided for students and families who are ready for some additional learning tasks.
  • We encourage you to adapt tasks to support or challenge your child as you see fit. For example, the task may ask for three sentences, but your child may be capable of more. Likewise, your child may be capable of one and that is okay too!
  • To avoid creating gaps in students' maths understanding, in Foundation, we start with strategies like counting on, draw a picture and number lines.
  • If your child will be absent from learning or Google Meet sessions, please notify your classroom teacher or the office as usual.
  • Please don't hesitate to contact your students' teacher via Sentral if you have any questions or concerns
