www.commonsensemedia.org gives parents and carers some good advice into what is available that is safe online for children. Here are a few suggestions - and they are all free!

Can we watch movies and shows or download audiobooks or ebooks for free?

Plenty of free stuff is out there—you just have to hunt a bit—and sometimes you need to endure ads or other interruptions. But if free is what you're looking for, check out these options:

Can we play video games together without shelling out for an expensive game console?

Among consoles, controllers, and games that can run $60 a pop, investing in a PlayStation, Switch, or Xbox can get pricey, fast. But as long as your smartphone or computer is fairly up to date, you still have options. Some cost a few bucks, but they're much cheaper than the standard console game. Here are some favorites:

  • Onitama. A fast, fun chess game that keeps players thinking.
  • Patchwork: The Game. This board game with puzzles is fun for two players.

Are any decent educational apps available for free?

You don't always have to pay big bucks for great educational games, apps, and websites. Lots of outstanding free options are only a click away. The best part is that kids can check them out and move on if a title isn't a great fit—and it won't affect your wallet! These resources are either completely free or full of quality free content for kids to explore. Next time your kid is looking for fun, try giving them one of the following picks below. They'll learn while being entertained! Here are a few faves:

  • Peep Ciences: Colores. Entirely in Spanish (an English version is available), this preschool app teaches colors.
  • NASA. Kids learn all about space and science with this free app.
  • Lifeboat to Mars. Learn biology with this free ecosystem game.
