Year 5/6
Year 5/6 Term Four 2020
Welcome back to the start of Term Four! We are looking forward to coming back to school and applying the new skills we have developed in our time away. Thank you for supporting us and your children during remote learning and as we transition back to working with onsite with all students. We have many exciting units of leraning an dactivities planned.
Religious Education
Students will be exploring Confirmation and the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit. We will also be investigating how we can be Stewards of Creation and linking this closely with our inquiry unit. To finish off the year we will be exploring different perspectives in the various gospels, of the birth of Jesus and how it connects to our Christmas story and celebrations today.
English
This term, the senior students will develop their reading, speaking and listening and writing skills through a variety of activities. Our literacy rotation activities will continue this term to develop student reading and reflection skills.
In writing, students will explore narrative structures and develop characters and settings within their writing. Students will continue their creative writing skills, researching and creating various styles of poetry, later in the term.
Maths
The following curriculum topics will be taught this term:
- Geometry and Measurement: Perimeter and area
Students will calculate the area of regular and irregular 2D shapes. They will choose appropriate units of measurement in the metric system and convert between these units, while using decimals.
- Number and Algebra: Statistics and probability
Students will conduct chance experiments and represent the possible results using fractions, decimals and percentages. They will also compare their results to those of other students to see if there are discrepancies in the results they found.
- Measurement: Location and Transformation
Students will use a grid reference and Cartesian coordinates to describe locations. They will describe landmarks using directional language.
Health & PE
This term we are looking forward to returning to PE classes onsite. Students will have the opportunity to develop a variety of motor skills, their ability to work in teams and their leadership skills through a variety of modified games.
Inquiry
Our fourth term inquiry unit titled “RESPONSIBILITY for the future BELONGs to us all” will have a strong sustainability focus, where students will be investigating our oceans and what we need to do to protect them from human pollution. They will research something that has a negative impact on the ocean and create a 3D project, to compare the impact this has on a healthy ocean environment.
Social Emotional Learning
This term in SEL students will focus on their wellbeing, coping with returning to school and dealing with the challenges of our current pandemic crisis. Following this, we will be exploring gender and identity and how social influences affect how we interpret gender differences. This will be based on the Respectful Relationships guidelines and Catholic teachings.
Communication
Effective communication between family and school is an important factor in a student's learning. Please make contact with us if you have any questions, comments or concerns.
