2021 Walkathon

Mr Jim Gordon - President, MCA Parents and Friends Association

Triumphant 2021 MCA Walkathon

What a glorious day it was on Sunday for the 2021 MCA Walkathon. The event exceeded all expectations as the College family put on a show of strength and unity on our trek through the Gallipoli Barracks.

We had the perfect weather for our day which was enjoyed by over 1300 students and 600 parent/sibling walkers who then enjoyed the mighty Battle of the Bands at the main oval. We thank you all for joining in the fun and contributing to this fun day.

Special thanks and recognition goes to the Gallipoli Barracks for their continued support and community engagement in allowing us to host this event on their precinct.

Funds Raised

With another 2 weeks of fundraising remaining, I am pleased to report that we have currently raised in excess of $70,000 that will be put towards improving the Champagnat Centre which will hugely benefit all of the whole College family and visitors to the College.

Volunteers & Event Organisers

We had over 120 enthusiastic volunteers committing to the event. Our volunteers for which we are truly grateful were represented in many areas;

  • College Parents (including our wonderful Defence Force, Qld Police Service parents) and College staff guiding and assuring the safety of our walkers throughout the course.
  • The 80 volunteers, ticketing, cooking, and serving our starving walkers at the McMahon Oval.
  • Our fantastic music department that made the Battle of the Bands come to life.

Thank you to all involved in the event planning and coordination consisting of representatives from the P&F, MCA and the Gallipoli Barracks. Through many meetings and dedication, we have built strong bonds that will hold us in good stead for future Walkathon events. Special thanks goes to Marist parent Jon Pollard LTCOL who took on the invaluable role of being the critical link between the Barracks and the College/parents. Jon, we thank you for your leadership, positivity and continued focus on values, community, and future Walkathons.

Special thanks also goes out to Marty Kerwin who has been instrumental in the running of the Walkathon for 13 years. We sincerely thank Marty and his family for their dedicated contribution and support to the event. It was great to see them relax and enjoy the walk in their final year at MCA.

Thank you everyone for a wonderful day. We are truly a strong Marist family.
