Year 8 Science

In the Year 8 Enhancement Science classes, we have been studying biology and the different systems in our bodies. We have been currently learning about the respiratory system and how oxygen moves into our bodies and carbon dioxide moves out. In our recent lesson, we used a new device that arrived at MGSC called a CO2 sensor which measures the amount of CO2 in the air.

The experiment that we conducted used a straw, a ziplock bag and the CO2 sensor. Firstly, we set up the app called Sparkview which is able to place all our data into a graph and we did this on our iPads, via Bluetooth connection.  We then set up our experiment by sealing the sensor and a straw at either end of the ziplock bag.

Next we used this set up to measure our CO2 concentration levels before and after exercise. The results were different in each individual experiment and were interesting to compare against each other.

Overall the experiment was fun and engaging and we learnt more about the respiratory system.
