Year 7 Science

This term Year 7A and B science students have been learning about mixtures and how to separate them.

As a challenge, students were divided into various countries and tasked with cleaning dirty water by filtration. The students could use various materials like sand and marble chips which were available in the “Filter Store”, but could only purchase those items if their country had enough money.

Here’s what Eva Longhurst of 7A had to say:

“This week we had an amazing activity in science, we used a lot of skills to create a filter, to clean water. Not only did it involve creating, but we also had to budget with the ‘money’ we had and try to convince others who had more money to donate to us (or blackmail them 😂). Certain items cost more than others, making it a big problem solving activity.

Overall it was super fun and taught us some great skills.”

The finished products" (L-R): Team USA, Team Canada, Team Ghana, Team Cameroon, Team Uganda and Team Ethiopia

Team Canada and Team Cameroon were tied in first place with Team Canada’s filter being slightly more efficient that Team Cameroon’s. This was despite the fact that Team Cameroon only had $50 to build their filter while Team Canada had $800!

Well done, Year 7!
