Walk to school Day

On Thursday our Specialist day, we had Walk to school day at SFS. The purpose of the day is:

  • to encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school aged children
  • to promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habbits.
  • To help children develop vital road crossing skills and ensure children up to the age of 10 hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road.
  • To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles

Despite the cold and drizzly start to the day, we had an excellent turn out at the 2 sites with more than 50 children and some of their families and siblings walking to school with the teachers.

SFS Twilight Community Market

The SFS community twilight market will be held this year on Thursday 4th November from 5pm until 8pm. We are hoping this year will be the biggest and best ever, especially after the difficult year we had last year. We are still looking for market stalls. It could be toys, crafts, new clothing, baked goods, jewellery, plants etc. If you are interested in having a stall or know of someone who is interested, please contact the school for an application form or for more information, email me rlenko@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au

BeYou

BeYou is a resource for educators that focuses on the mental health of all members of the school community, students, staff, parents and the wider community. This week’s fact sheet from the BeYou website is all about accessing mental heath services.

  • Accessing mental health services

GPs are a good place to start to arrange a referral to a mental health professional. They often have knowledge of services and mental health professionals in the local area. Referrals can also be made through an NDIS ECEI partner.

Families starting the process of accessing a service may benefit from some support, such as making the initial phone call to a service or an appointment.

Here are some key things for you to consider when supporting the family to explore which service or professional is most appropriate:

  • What information do you have about how the mental health services operate (e.g. is it family-centred, individual or play-based)? What’s important to the family?
  • Is the family able to travel? Do any services offer home visits or teleconference appointments?
  • Does the child or young person have a preferred gender when it comes to the practitioner or mental health professional?
  • What is the waiting period to access the service? What about cost?

If you are concerned about a child or young person in your care at risk of immediate harm, call 000 or your nearest hospital emergency department.

MConnect and Parent garden group

This term we are offering a parent garden group through Wellsprings for Women. This will run fortnightly on a Tuesday from 9.30am until 10.30am

Everyone is most welcome to attend. During the workshops, Robyn will teach the skills needed to grow plants in the garden and you will be able to take home the food you grow and share it with your family. Please email me if you would like to attend.

The Resilience Project

At SFS we are a partner school with the Resilience Project. The students in Years 3 to 6 have a reflection journal they use at school. The key principles of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy are taught. For more information, visit https://theresilienceproject.com.au/at-home/

If you are concerned about the wellbeing of your child, please do not hesitate to contact me rlenko@sfslynbrook.catholic.edu.au

We also have a school chaplain Maureen who works Tuesdays and Thursdays and a Psychologist Gabriela from Catholicare, who works on Mondays who might be able to help your child.
