Year Two News

The Year Two children have been learning about the Daily 3 for Maths. The Daily 3 are: Maths on my Own, Maths with Someone and Writing about Maths.

We looked at the positive behaviours that we are expecting during The Daily 3 such as work on maths the whole time, stay in one spot, get started straight away, collect and pack away the materials required quietly, ignore distractions and work on stamina.

We discussed and listed possible activities that the children could do for each of the Daily 3 such as:

Maths on my Own:

  • write about all the things you know about a certain maths concept
  • make the 3D cube
  • complete trimension activities
  • add up your coins in your maths kit
  • measure things with your ruler
  • write down the times tables
  • make numbers with the MAB from your maths kit
  • write maths problems
  • make different times on your clock in your maths kit
  • complete skip counting patterns using the numberline in your maths kit
  • write down your favourite maths activity and explain what you learnt and why you liked it
  • complete an activity from the “Maths on my own” tub

Maths with Someone

  • play a game from the “Maths with Someone” tub. These are games that we have already played and the children are familiar with
  • play a game from Mrs D’s maths tub
  • make up your own game

Writing about Maths

  • write about a maths concept you have been looking at
  • write all you know about a certain number eg all you know about the number 13
  • write down some maths problems
  • write out the times tables

The children then made a poster showing all the positive behaviours we expect during the Daily 3 and then practised each of the Daily 3.

The teachers were very pleased with the way the children collected and packed the equipment away, quietly completed their games/tasks and were very imaginative with the ideas they came up with for Maths on my own.
