Refugee Week: 20 - 26 June

Did you know that Refugee Week runs from Sunday 20 June to Saturday 26 June this year?

During Refugee Week, Hobsons Bay City Council joins the Refugee Council of Australia and many other Local Governments and organisations around Australia, to celebrate the contributions people of Refugee and Asylum Seeker background make to this strong, resilient and thriving community.

In 2021 the Refugee Week theme is UNITY

The volatility of life in recent times has shown us unequivocally that we need to work together often merely to survive, let alone to thrive and progress. Let’s take the opportunity to start afresh and rebuild our lives together. To count our blessings and to put them to work. Existing and emerging communities. Working together.

Stronger. Safer. Healthier. Happier. Together

Join us by getting involved in activities during Refugee Week.  Refugee Council of Australia has collated a large range of classroom resources for teachers and students. For local activities visit Council’s website.

The Nudel Kart

We have purchased 2 Nudel Karts, one is up and ready for Play.

Cam used these today with 3C , see photos below.

The Nüdel Kart and it's founder, Marcus Veerman, appeared on Channel 7's House of Wellness last weekend. It highlighted the importance of child directed, play based learning and creativity.

You can watch the segment by following this link. You could certainly share these with your students before a 'Kart ' session

The Sports Update

What a fantastic day we had on Tuesday 25th May for the QoP Athletics Carnival.

There were smiles galore as the children raced around the track, threw implements and jumped higher and longer. Turns out we were racing as well, to finish before the rain and the lockdown. It was a close contest and fortunately we came out the victors this year on both fronts. A HUGE thankyou to everyone who helped make the day a success including family members of the kids and the daughter and spouse of teachers to boost the helper numbers. I hope all of the kids slept well that night.

Some students were up again the next day for another round of physical exertion. On Wednesday, 20 students form QoP competed at the Division Cross Country Championships held at Presidents Park in Werribee. They stretched those sore muscles to run either 2km or 3 km and put in a valiant effort. Well done to all of them and a special mention to Mia Mifsud who placed in the top 12 to qualify to compete at the Regional Cross Country Championships at Brimbank Park in a couple of weeks.

Well done QoP for a great week in sport.

Vases of Beautiful Flowers

Inspired by Australian artist Margaret Preston's paintings of vases of flowers, the Grade 3 and 4 children applied their pattern making skills when creating vases and paper skills to shape flowers with 3D effects.

COLOURFUL WALL HANGINGS

The Grade 5 children created wall hangings by decorating icy pole sticks, drawing a variety of line patterns on them,

They assembled them and added woollen fringes and hangers.

Very colourful artworks Grade 5 !

What’s been happening in music?

Term two has been exciting with the sounds of ukuleles, xylophones and beautiful singing voices buzzing in the music room. Our school choir has been busy rehearsing each week and cannot wait to perform for the school community as soon as they can. It has also been wonderful to see many of our juniors ‘getting their groove on’ during ‘Just Dance’ directed play. Here are a few photos of some of our students in action…

Being on School Holidays doesn’t mean fun learning has to stop!

There are some great opportunities to keep some of the fundamentals of Maths ticking along in a fun and relaxed manner.

Some of our best learning can occur at home and this was evident during our past stints in Lockdown.

Take some time to read the following article and brush up on some essential Maths skills.
