Literacy and Maths

As we are heading back into another lockdown,  it is even more important that we give ourselves time to have fun throughout the day. A brain Break is just what it sounds like: a break from whatever the kids are focusing on. Short Brain Breaks during work time have been shown to have real benefits. They reduce stress, anxiety, and frustration. And they can help kids focus and be more productive.

The Preps love to dance. So as a Brain Break, we have been practising lots of different dances. Watch us on the video below.

Here are some links so we can show you some of our favourite dances.

Last week we made Play-Doh. We all made our own batch and chose the color we would like. Here is the recipe if you would like to make some more at home.

2 cups flour

1 cup salt

1 tablespoon oil

1 cup cold water

Food colouring

(We added some essential oil to make it smell nice)

Thank you to Mel and Jasmine for participating in this activity even during remote learning. It’s wonderful to still be able to do sensory activities and have you included in the fun.

As we continue with our Report writing genre, last week we created a bee project. We learnt lots of interesting facts about bees, including that they have 4 wings and 5 eyes and that they live everywhere except Antarctica.

A couple of weeks ago we reported on pandas. Did you know that pandas are mammals, live in China, and mainly eat bamboo? We think our pandas are very cute.

As a revision of our short ‘a’ sound, we made some ants. Can you see them walking along our skirting board? We love all our craft activities. Cutting and pasting really helps with fine motor skills and following instructions to create our finished works of art is an important skill to master. Often, we look at a final product and try and replicate it. This can be tricky. We then added our own individual embellishments.

Book week is coming up soon. We have started reading the picture storybooks that have been nominated. We are going to vote to see which one we think is the best.

Also, we made shaving cream prints by putting shaving cream into a dish, adding dots of food dye, swirling it around, and then placing paper on top of this. The final step of this procedure was to scrape off the shaving cream and voila! We are left with beautiful marbled prints.

We try and mix up our Literacy lessons and include lots of games as well. Here are some of our Preps playing a memory game to practise reading some high-frequency words.

Kind Regards
