StudentVoice

SRC Representatives and SLC Literacy

Our student voice for this newsletter is represented by Mackenzie in the Senior Learning Community who wrote a piece to explain her diorama from her literacy circle activity. Mackenzie produced a wonderful piece of work that she worked incredibly hard on.

Last week, Mr. Brophy who runs our Student Representative Council (SRC) also spoke with Lucas from Prep about his experience with joining the SRC and what he was looking forward to in his role as an SRC member for Prep.

A literature circle is equivalent for young people of an adult book club, but with greater structure, expectation, and rigor. The aim is to encourage thoughtful discussion and a love of reading in young people.

For my literature circle, I was chosen to play the role of creator (the role of the creator is when you can make something creative to represent the scene/s) from the class book I have been reading The night they stormed Eureka by Jackie French. I chose a diorama because, so far, everyone had drawn a scene/s from their book and I wanted to do something different.

My diorama is the scene where Mr. Puddleham has just come back from a justice and peace meeting that Mrs. Puddleham didn’t want him to go to and now she isn’t speaking to him, so instead, she fills up a water bucket to avoid him.

So far in the book Sam (a homeless child) has gone back in time to a few days before the Eureka Stockade in 1854. Sam has met the Puddlehams (a kind couple who used to work for the Queen), George (a young child), and the Professor (one of the smartest diggers) who have helped her live in the days of 1854. Sam starts to get worried when she hears of a few meetings going on about freedom and peace and after one of those meetings she realises they’re talking about the Eureka Stockade.

Mackenzie, SLC

In a previous issue of the newsletter, I spoke about the Student Representative Council, or the SRC for short. The SRC is a group of students from each class that speak on behalf of the students in their class. Our current focus in Wellbeing is Student Voice and SRC is a very important part of student voice and creates opportunities for students to be part of the decision-making process in our school.

SRC members from each class are chosen by the students to represent them. We have elected SRC members for Semester 1 and then a new group is chosen for Semester 2.

Our elected members for Semester 2 are:

Prep: Lucas and Jasmine

JLC: Kate and Ben

MLC: Ava and Ryan

SLC: Hasan and Ruby

After our previous meeting, I asked Lucas to describe what he enjoyed most about the meeting and what they are looking forward to being in SRC. Here is their response:

I enjoyed the SRC meeting because we got to be with students from other classrooms. My big brother James was there and he took care of me. I also enjoyed that we took turns reading information about why SRC is important.

I liked learning about what SRC does and why we should have one at our school.

I am excited to be part of SRC because we will be able to help other students in the school when they have problems.

Lucas, Prep.

Kind regards
