Challenge Box Task

This term is the last in the kitchen for our Grade 5 and 6 students. To culminate their learning I have set them a challenge box task. As part of this task the students have been given a selected group of ingredients and are required to source a recipe that contains the 'master'“ ingredient and at least 3 other ingredients from their list.

The first group of students found this task quite a challenge. Not only do they need to find a recipe, but it must also be able to be prepared and cooked within a 40 minute time frame. We look forward to seeing what recipes they find, then creating them and sharing with our peers.

What have we been making?

This week we made delightful little pies using potato. They were very simple to  make and very tasty. We enjoyed them with a mixed green salad that had fresh oranges and a citrus dressing.

The students from Miss Whyte’s class will be joining us in the kitchen each Friday this term. Their program will be based on learning basic kitchen skills, these include grating, cutting, peeling and slicing. The students will also continue to learn about healthy eating and  make a variety of foods using the fresh produce from our garden.

Mudbrick Cafe

All being well, our Mudbrick Cafe will be open on Wednesday 11th August.  Please keep an eye on our newsletter and Facebook page for updates.

Garden Update

Welcome back to everyone following the school break. This term we have the 5/6 students back in the garden. They had the opportunity to work in small groups to prune some of the fruit trees and plant out broad beans and peas. The pruning team learnt how to identify a fruiting spur and use the hand saws to cut back the tree and promote new growth. Freya and Chloe worked extremely well together to get over 40 seedlings into the ground! The broad beans will grow up the frame that was erected by the 3/4 students. A big thanks to Pete, Max and Alicia for mulching under the flagpole and clothesline. Last term potatoes were planted in the hothouse and in the coming weeks the students will be able to harvest them. Looking forward to an exciting term in the garden with the 5/6 students.
