Years Five/Six News

Term Three Curriculum Information

This term in Reading, Years Five and Six will be focusing on thinking deeper into the way characters are portrayed, including their traits, feelings and emotions. Students will be delving deeper into author's message and different lessons we can learn from stories- in both fiction and non-fiction texts. We will be looking at a variety of texts, that depict themes of diversity, persistence and resilience. Students will be continuing to track their thoughts during Independent Reading, and extend their text responses by thinking beyond the text.

In Writing, students have started the term by focusing on descriptive writing before revisiting information reports to conclude our Integrated Studies Unit on Ocean. We will be looking at narrative writing and how students can successfully plan, draft and edit their work with the appropriate features of a story. We will be focusing on explanation writing towards the end of the term, to link in with our Government Unit.

In Maths, so far, students have had the opportunity to develop their understanding of finding equivalent fractions, converting between improper fractions and mixed numerals, adding and subtracting fractions and finding fractions of whole numbers. We will soon be moving into data, where students will focus on collecting, reading and analysing data sets. Later in the term, the 5/6s will be focusing on chance and probability, and finish off by revisiting 2D and 3D shapes in addition to a focus on angles.
