Around Foundation (Prep)

Foundation students have been exploring an Inquiry topic called, Staying Alive. At the start of Term 2 the children were asked, What does your body need to stay healthy and happy? Using small coloured circles, the students drew pictures to record their thoughts.

After exploring this topic over the past 8 weeks, we revisited this activity to discuss what we now know. The students recorded their thoughts on a different coloured circle to show how much they have learnt. Many students could think of healthy foods at the start of term but are now thinking about exercise, sleep, fresh air, family/love, meditation, etc. as the many ways we keep ourselves healthy.

During Reader's Workshop sessions, Foundation students have been practising their reading and focusing on some of the strategies good readers use, such as:

  • Looking for clues in the picture
  • Having a quick rest when they see a full stop
  • Stretching out words and listening to the sounds
  • Using expression
  • Making their reading smooth, so they do not sound like a robot

The children have also continued to focus on their sounds, vowels and blends.. They enjoyed making words where the middle sound was 'o' and challenged themselves to put some of these words into interesting sentences or to think of some rhyming words.
