From the 1/2 classrooms

Throughout this term the Grade 1/2 students have been exploring the concept of Sustainability! We have explored the ways we can each take responsibility to look after our environment and preserve it for the future. Student's have learnt about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle. We collected lunchbox data and graphed our use of rubbish to see how we can reduce this by packing 'nude food'. We have created objects with a purpose by reusing rubbish from around the house. As well as learning all about recycling from stories and non-fiction texts read in class.

At the beginning of this unit each class participated in a rubbish burying experiment. We collected different types of waste; general, compost and recyclable, to observe how or if the rubbish decomposes over time. Student's made predictions back in week 1, and have been looking forward to the end of term to finally dig up the rubbish! This has been a great opportunity for students to reflect on the unit and how they can leave a lighter environmental footprint.
