An Inviting Space to Learn
Yan Li, Early Childhood Teacher
The physical environment plays an important role in children’s learning, and they thrive in environments that are suited to their interest and developmental stages. The learning environment is viewed as a place that is welcoming, engaging, and culturally representative of community, embraces nature.
The learning environment should promote relationships, communication, collaboration, and exploration through play. As for materials, they are added to the environment to promote creativity, thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as open-ended play. At Glen Education Brady Road Kindergarten, we value children’s learning through play and create the learning environment that is welcoming, engaging, inclusive, and promotes an awareness of sustainable practices.
To create a welcoming and engaging indoor and outdoor learning environment, our educators take children’s interest into account. We provide natural and open-ended materials and things of interest for children see, touch and smell. Different learning areas contribute to experiences -for example, pretend play corner, art and craft, books and literacy , blocks and building materials that can help children’s engagement and learning. The layout of the environment encourages the children to disperse and be together by choice, which involves children in decision making.
Inclusive practice is considered in the learning environment at Glen Brady Road Kindergarten, because we believe every child should be included in the program. The learning environment includes different cultural elements that promote children’s sense of belonging in the group, and we provide the children with additional needs with appropriate resources, which supports inclusive practice as part of a group learning environment.
Glen Brady Road Kindergarten values sustainable practice, so we encourage the children to reuse, recycle and repurpose resources. This provides opportunities for children to be creative in ways that develop their respect for the environment and thoughtful use of limited natural resources. Carboard boxes and other recycling materials are offered to children to create and express their thoughts and ideas through how they make use of those materials. this also supports creative thought and strengthens problem solving skills - an important skill for lif
