Glen Education Professional Development Day

Building Connections and Living True to Our Purpose

Our year began when we gathered together as an organisation, to undertake a 'whole staff' Professional Development Day - all 161 of us! As we entered the room, a sense of belonging was evident, as the conversations flowed, new colleagues were welcomed, and old friends connected once more.

As the day began, we were provided with an overview of Glen’s Strategic Plan, and we as an organisation are preparing to rise to the challenges and changes coming over the next five years in the early childhood sector, such as the introduction of the Best Start Best Life initiative.  As the day progressed there were many opportunities to engage in conversation about our shared Mission, Vision, Purpose, and Values. These form the key principals which inform our daily work with children, families and the community.

Part of the day included the “Creative Challenge.” Upon arrival, a display of natural materials, wooden resources and colourful silks were carefully placed on each table. This was to provoke collaborative teamwork, rich conversation and a familiarisation with the Glen Education values. Each team was then challenged to use these materials to represent one of Glen Educations six key values. These include: Respect, Community, Integrity, Community, Celebration and Excellence.

The room was filled with rich conversation and collaboration as teams worked together to represent these values through the symbol of play.  It was a brilliant way to connect back to our practice and purpose.  In the afternoon, our Educational Leader, Melissa MacMaster, provided a provocation for discussion:

"What is worthy of children's time?"

This generated discussions between team members and across tables, as educators reflected on what our purpose is, what do children need to learn in their kindergarten years and how can we best support children and families as they begin their learning journeys in our services.  These discussions have sparked inspiration for our programming and have helped to shape the team goals for each service in 2023.  Time is so precious and goes so fast, so as educators, we want to ensure that what we present children to learn, will form strong foundations on which to build a successful life.

Family goals and aspirations form part of the intentions within our learning environments. Families are encouraged to 'check in' regularly with educators about their child's progress, both formally and informally, and by engaging with theri child's individual learning portfolio (available in the children's room at the kindergarten and available to take home and add to as well!)
