Junior School update

Year 6 induction ceremony

On Friday, the Year 6 students, were inducted into their roles as our Junior School leaders. They demonstrated exemplary poise and maturity as they accepted this responsibility. In her Principal’s address, Ms Brennan spoke of the students’ leadership responsibility to be role models, to speak kindly, behave inclusively and make wise choices. It is heartening to see already how the Year 6s have risen to the challenge to make visible these attributes to the younger Junior School students.

Career Allsorts

In 2022, students in Years 3, 4 and 5 took part in the inaugural Career Allsorts program. This initiative was organised by Independent Schools After hearing from 5 inspiring Shelford mums, students painted or drew a picture of a job they would like to do when they are older. 10 student artworks were then selected for the Career Allsorts exhibition. Congratulations to the following students:

Choral Success

It is always exciting to hear about our students’ achievements outside of school hours. Emily and Chloe BF took part in a special musical event over the summer break.

On the holidays we got into an auditioned choir called “Gondwana choir - Voices of Angels”. It was an amazing opportunity, and we loved every second of it. We went to Sydney and had a week of rehearsals with singers ranging from 10 to 14 years old. We made lifelong friends from all around the country! We sang at the Sydney Oprea House at the end of the week and got to sing 2 of our songs on the stage and the other 5 in the choir stalls. This was an experience that we will never forget.

Awesome Art

In JDC Visual Art we have been exploring line and shape to create portraits. We recently explored using shape to make up features of the face, developing our illustration of shapes and cutting skills through collage. We hope you enjoy some of our explorations!

Junior School Disco

Following on from the success of the inaugural Junior School discos in 2022, the wonderful SPA will be hosting another one of these in March.

eSafety

Parents should know that since Disney has expired copyright of Winne the Pooh and his friends this year, a disturbing horror film (R18+) has been made with the popular characters. While the film is only available for viewing at cinemas, social media platforms are featuring disturbing snippets of the movie, and a simple Google search will expose children to these. According to Stay Safe on Social, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat will be especially high-risk platforms when it comes to material from the movie. SEA (Sex Education Australia) parent webinar

SEA educators deliver Shelford Junior School’s Department of Education’s mandated sex education in Term 2. As part of their parent education program, expert educator, mother and co-founder of Sex Education Australia Justine Kiely-Scott is offering a special one-hour webinar on the topic of pornography and how it affects young people as they grow up; why it’s so important that parents and caregivers try to limit the negative impact; and what you can do to prepare in a very simple and appropriate way. If you would like more information or to register for this webinar here.
