Doctors In Secondary Schools.

Leanne Stables

DISS Nurse

Doctors in School (DISS)

Maffra Secondary College works in conjunction with Maffra Medical Group to bring a GP and a nurse to the school once per week on a Monday, from 9.30am to 1pm during school term only. The nurse is available until 2 pm.  We have two GP’s, Dr Margaret Young and Dr Stuart Anderson who alternate weekly.

Appointments can be made via Compass, calling the school clinic directly on a Monday or coming up to see the nurse to arrange an appointment. Or, you may ask a teacher, parent or Wellbeing staff member to arrange it for you.

There is a drop-in session available at recess that does not require an appointment.

This program is a free service that hopes to make health care more accessible to young people, provide support for them and to reduce the pressure on working families. Student confidentiality and cultural sensitivity remain paramount.

A student does not need their parents or carers to attend, but if a student would like a parent or carer to attend, they are very welcome.

We welcome you to visit the clinic to come and have a chat, or get any brochures that may interest you.

Dr Stuart is a GP who has lived and worked in Maffra since 2008. He has special interests in adolescent health, mental health, reproductive health (contraception and management of unplanned pregnancies) and skin cancer medicine. Dr Stuart believes that rural patients should have equitable access to high quality health care that is not dependent on where they live.

When he is not at the DISS clinic, Dr Stuart can be found at Maffra Medical Group, or you may see him trying not to fall off his mountain bike on the local trails, playing his drums in his blues band, or photographing performers at Live At The Bundy."

"Leanne has been a nurse for over 25 years, with experience in a variety of areas. She has enjoyed working in Melbourne, London, Darwin and Gippsland. She has been at the GP clinic in Maffra for the past 4 years and loves the new experience of working at the school with the students, school staff and GP's. Leanne has three teenage boys and enjoys being outdoors, travel and the cinema."

Dr Margaret is a GP who has worked in Maffra since 2019. She has a special interest in adolescent health, mental health and reproductive health.

When she is not at the DISS clinic, Dr Young can be found at Maffra Medical Group. Otherwise she spends her time attempting to juggle knives, playing RPGs on PS4 or falling off her unicycle."

What services will the GP be providing?

The GPs participating in the Doctors in Secondary Schools program will provide young people with the same services as those GPs in the community, including management of physical health, mental health, and sexual and reproductive health issues.
