UNIFORM

At Maffra Secondary College, we are proud of and value our college uniform. Wearing the correct uniform is one of our ‘Expected Behaviours’ and this was something that all students, staff and parents agreed on when we reviewed our expected behaviours. Wearing the correct uniform, creates a sense of belonging and school pride, it is a requirement of entry into our college, and is endorsed by our College Council.  As outlined in the College’s Uniform Policy, all students are to wear either the summer, winter or PE uniform in its entirety.  This means that students are not allowed to mix and match summer, winter and PE uniform items.  Our Year 12 students are permitted to wear the approved Year 12 jumper as an alternative to the College jumper.

KEY UNIFORM ITEMS WHERE CLARIFICATION IS NEEDED:

SHOES - When wearing the PE uniform, students can wear any type / brand of sports shoes.

When wearing our winter or summer uniform, students are to wear black shoes that are flat heeled (no wedges) and should be accompanied with black laces.

HATS- Students are encouraged to wear school hats in the yard, particularly during terms 1 & 4.  Navy or white beanies can be worn during terms 2 & 3 however, all hats need to be removed on entering a classroom unless, permission has been sought for medical or religious reasons.

This must be accompanied by a letter from a medical practitioner.

JUMPERS – Navy polar fleece, navy woollen jumpers or the navy PE tracksuit top with the gold piping can be worn over any of our uniforms; summer, winter or PE.

COATS – We have a navy soft shell school jacket for students to wear during the colder months.  NO other jacket is to be worn.

SOCKS – Students are to wear navy, black, white or grey socks

SCARVES / HEADBANDS – These must be either white or navy, no other colours are accepted.

TIES – The official school tie may be worn with a white business shirt.

LONG SLEEVED TOPS – If a long-sleeved top is worn under the school polo shirt this is to be the same colour as the polo shirt: plain white under the white shirt or navy under the PE polo top.  If any other colour other than white or navy is worn and this can be seen, the student will be asked to remove this.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ‘ARE NOT’ TO BE WORN AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR OUR COLLEGE UNIFORM

  • Hoodies – For OH&S purposes Hoodies are not to be worn as an alternative to school uniform.  Ask the student to remove the item immediately and place it in their locker. Offer a school jumper to the student to use if they are cold.
  • Puffer or Non School Jackets – Ask the student to remove the jacket immediately and place it in their locker. Offer the student an extra school jumper for the day if they are cold.
  • Leggings – YLCs will offer students tracksuit pants to put over their leggings.

CASUAL / FREE DRESS DAYS – Students are to wear clothing that is suitable for a school learning environment.  Shoestring straps, singlet tops and short shorts / beach attire are not acceptable. On these days, for OH&S reasons, students’ must wear enclosed shoes.

Open toed shoes will not be permitted.  Thongs are not permitted to be worn to school.

STUDENTS OUT OF UNIFORM

If a student comes to school in the wrong uniform, they need to have a note from their parent / carer stating the reasons why and when they expect their child to be in full school uniform.

The student, on arriving at school should…

  • Report to the Year Level Coordinator who will check the note and give the student a uniform pass.  This is to be done each day the child is out of uniform.  If a student is wearing leggings, hoodies or puffer jackets please refer to the process above as these items are not to be worn as an alternative uniform.
  • The student will carry the uniform pass with them for the entire day, showing teachers who question the student about their uniform.
  • This will be done at the beginning of each class and if a teacher questions the student in the yard or other learning spaces.
  • Teachers are to check in and talk to students out of uniform after the learning starts.
  • If the student loses the uniform pass, it is their responsibility to see the YLC for another pass during recess or lunch.

Year Level Coordinators and Team Leaders will oversee uniform passes making sure that all students are treated equally.
