FAITH MATTERS

Hello!

My name is Gerry Vytilingam and I’m excited to be appointed in the new role of ‘Faith in Action Leader’ at St Mary MacKillop College. I may appear as a familiar face to some, as I’ve facilitated reflection days and music ministry sessions with the Gen Bryant Team for students at MacKillop College, Holy Family Parish and St Mary’s Primary Schools in Swan Hill and Sea Lake in 2021 & 2022. 

In mid-January of this year, I moved from Melbourne to Swan Hill to join the College and lead the development of Catholic identity through faith and social justice initiatives. In my role, I facilitate the organisation of Masses, liturgies, prayer at assemblies, retreats, reflection days and mentor the student Faith and Mission Committee. I also assist in staff faith formation through professional learning and support the Religious Education staff at the College. 

Over the last nine years, I’ve been involved in youth ministry, music ministry and the development of faith programs across various Catholic primary and high schools in Victoria and Queensland. In parish and diocesan settings, I’ve had the opportunity to journey with young people as they navigate the questions of life with a lens of faith. 

Whilst there are challenges in being a person of Christian faith in the world, I’ve witnessed how an invitation to a relationship with Jesus can transform people’s lives for the better. My Catholic faith is an integral part of my life, and my relationship with God has shaped (and continues to shape) the experiences I have and my purpose. I believe that a dignity focused approach to faith education can empower students as leaders for both the Church and the world. I look forward to seeing the way our students here at the College can challenge and change society with faith, through their words, prayers, spirituality and actions. 

I am so grateful to all the staff and students who have welcomed me and hope to continue meeting more friendly faces around campus! I feel very fortunate to serve this community in the faith space. My office is located next to the Chapel and students are most welcome to come by for a chat or to say hello.
