What's happening in our learning spaces?

STUDENTS OF THE WEEK

FOUNDATION

It has been a busy week in Foundation, filled with lots of finding out, collaborating and thinking. The Foundation students are to be congratulated for the positive way they are being self-managers and engaging in their new Morning Routine each day within their learning spaces.

As readers, we engaged in a shared reading of the text ‘Mrs Wishy-washy’. The students identified the title, front cover and illustrations throughout the text to help understand what the characters in the story are doing. We introduced the Colour Semantics, ‘who’, ‘what-doing’ and ‘where’ and as thinkers, we used these to help us identify who the characters are, what they did and where the story took place. After reading, we drew the who, what-doing and where for one of the characters in the text. Some of us even attempted to write some of the characters from the text.

As mathematicianswe have been continuing to extend our understanding of subitising and counting forwards and backwards from 1 to 20. We engaged with tens frames flashcards and then placed our own materials on the tens frames to show our understanding of a number. We had lots of fun playing maths games outside like number balls and counting hopscotch. As collaborators, we have engaged in maths puzzles where we need to work together to find all the pieces for a specific number.

We also had the opportunity to properly meet and spend some time with our Buddies! As inquirers, we had some questions about what we would like to know about St Fidelis' School. Some of us had questions about where our Buddies learn and what the building behind the school was. The wonderful Year 6 Buddies showed us around the SLA, explaining what facilities the building has and how the learning in Year 6 is different from Foundation. We had so much fun with our Buddies and we can’t wait to do more learning with them.

We can’t wait to have more fun learning in Foundation with Discovery starting this week!

YEAR 1/2

This week in 1/2 we have been making lots of new discoveries. We had the opportunity to listen to the story ‘All the Ways to be Smart’ written by Davina Bell. After hearing the story, we shared our discoveries with our peers. To extend our thinking further we made connections to ourselves and identified the different ways that we are smart. We documented our thinking on paper and created a display in the Junior Learning Area to share with the St Fidelis' learning community. We hope you have the chance to come and see it!

As mathematicians, we have been tuning in and finding out about the different ways to represent data on a graph. To find out about each other’s birthday months we created a picture graph. As thinkers, we analysed the graph and communicated our thinking about what we noticed. We will continue to refer to this throughout the year and add birthdays to our monthly calendar. We have also collected data about brain food as well as our favourite colours and sport. It has been a great way to help us get to know each other!

Being a part of a Catholic faith community, we gathered together to engage in prayer as a year level. As thinkers, we had the opportunity to consider the word ‘prayer’ and what we already know about this. We made connections to our previous experiences at school and at home. We also had time to explore different symbols and use our prior knowledge to communicate what we already know with others. To extend our thinking, this week we will explore a version of the ‘Our Father’ prayer and identify how the words of this prayer speak out to us today.

Last week we were very excited to be able to participate in a Hockey Clinic! We had the opportunity to learn various skills and play enjoyable games! It was lots of fun! Check out some photos below.

We kindly ask that if you are yet to bring in a box of tissues, could you please do so at your earliest convenience. One box per child should suffice, and we will store these to be used throughout the semester.  Also, a friendly reminder to make sure your child has their reading log book at school on Fridays to be signed and checked by their teachers.

Year 3/4

Welcome to Term 1 Week 3!

This week, teachers had the opportunity to Meet & Greet parents of Year 3/4. We would like to thank parents and carers for their time and patience as we held conversations on Wednesday night.

We are also very lucky to have so many wonderful and talented parents in our community who engaged in our ‘Parent Human Library’. Thank you for sharing your talents and passions with us, we will be sure to involve you in future events this year!

As members of a Faith Community, students engaged in a ‘Chalk Talk’ thinking routine to show their understanding of objects associated with Prayer. In small groups, students collaborated to record their ideas, observations and wonderings.

As inquirers, the Year 3/4 students are learning to build a positive learning community. Students were asked to bring an object to school that best represents their passions and interests. From this, students showed and talked about their objects which helped them find common interests and learn about each other. We created a ‘Museum of Us’ from this learning opportunity. If you haven’t visited our learning space yet, please come and take a look!

We look forward to another wonderful week of learning!

YEAR 5/6

This week in 5/6 we are looking at the structures and features of narrative writing. We are examining the grammatical features and the forms of sentences used so as to develop writing skills. In reading, we will be focussing on the text feature of comparing and contrasting. Students will look at 3 versions of the same text.

In mathematics, we are focussing on Place Value skills such as rounding, the power of ten in multiplying and dividing, breaking down numbers into their place value denominations and the significance of the decimal point and the zero as a place value position holder.

Our inquiry topic will focus on culture, beliefs and values and their importance in our diverse community.

NAPLAN is fast approaching for Year 5 students. Students will practise skills and strategies in preparation for the tasks to be completed.

Students are also preparing for Interschool Sports beginning next week. They will compete in either Softball, Bat Tennis or Basketball.  Students not competing in a given week will be participating in Intra School activities.

Last Friday saw the Year 6 receive their leadership badges in front of proud family and friends and the school community.

They also met with their Foundation Buddies and showed them around the SLA and played games and read with them.
