Grade 1 & 2

Term 2, Week 8

We cannot believe that we are already halfway through the year! Despite a short and busy Term 2 we have crammed in lots of fun and learning.

In Literacy, we have had a whole term focus on learning how to write narratives using the correct structure. Teachers have been blown away by the students' growth in this area and students have been so proud of their writing. During Reading we have continued to develop our comprehension strategies, focusing on inferring, predicting and visualising.

In Maths, we completed a solid unit on addition and subtraction while touching on various other areas such as time, shape and data. We are beginning to introduce more regular “challenging tasks” where students are able to develop their problem solving and reasoning skills.

Integrated has been a blast this term with our unit “How Do Things Grow and Survive?”, focusing on the biological sciences curriculum. We have investigated Australian habitats and various Australian animal features, using our excursion to Healesville Sanctuary at the beginning of the term to build interest and develop this learning. Within this unit we have also touched on Aboriginal perspectives and the significance of First Nation peoples connection to land. Students loved learning the Woiwurrung names for different Australian animals.

To celebrate this learning we will be holding a 1/2 Habitat Expo this Friday 16th June! Please arrive at your child’s classroom from 2pm onwards as they take you on a tour of their classroom turned Australian habitat. Students have become experts in their own habitats!

After this you are welcome to look at the other Year 1/2 classrooms with your child and then attend assembly at 2:45pm.

Once again we would like to thank all of the parent helpers that have volunteered over the term as well as all the parent support for our programs. We look forward to seeing you all at Parent Teacher Interviews over the next couple of weeks.

Looking ahead to Term 3

  • Our Integrated unit next term will be “What’s Our Story?”. This will be a history unit focusing on family history and changes from the past to present (technology, daily life, transport etc).
  • Over the holidays it would be great if you could have some conversations with your child related to these topics. If you have any “olden days” items at home, we encourage you to show these to your child and take some pictures.
  • Action Required - can you please provide your child with the following photos over the holidays:
    • A baby photo of themselves (between 0-12 months) as we would love to create a baby photo wall in classrooms
    • A Prep/Foundation photo of your child (preferably school photo) next to a Prep/Foundation school photo of a parent or grandparent (if available - otherwise a picture at the same age would be great)
    • These can either be brought to school as a hard copy or uploaded to Showbie so we can print it out.

Thank you again for all of your support and we hope you all have a lovely and safe winter break!
