Vermont Secondary College

SPORTING EXCELLENCE

- Blake M

Last week (8th-13th May) Year 12 student Blake represented Vermont Secondary College, playing in the School Sport Victoria baseball team at the School Sport Australia Baseball Championships in Lismore NSW.

Due to his national shadow squad commitments, he was not permitted to pitch, however he made some valuable contributions in the field and batting.  Blake’s performance against South Australia was fantastic – he had 3 hits (2 doubles and a triple, scoring 2 RBIs) and he was awarded the Victorian MVP for that game by the SA coaches. An outstanding achievement.

The Victorian team finished up the championships with a Bronze medal, beating WA/ACT convincingly in the Bronze medal match.

Congratulations Blake on an outstanding achievement representing your state and your school. Blake has been a great contributor on and off the field at VSC regularly participating in the school team as well as coaching younger year levels. Your level of expertise and goodwill is second to none and no surprise that success follows your way. We look forward to hearing about your national squad experience very soon.

STATE BOWLS

The SSV State Bowls Finals were held on Tuesday the 9th of May at Club Sunbury and VSC proudly had 3 of our students competing. Jake H (Yr 7), Jack C & Jack H (Yr 9) committed many hours of their time to train and prepare for this day and it was well worth it! The competition began with a round robin format and this included 3 sectional games. Unfortunately our day did not start the way we were hoping with a 3-7 loss to Maribyrnong College. After the nerves settled and our students got used to the speed of the bowling green, there was no stopping these Vermont SC superstars!  A formidable win (13-4) in the 2nd sectional game against McKinnon SC resulted in a huge confidence boost moving into the final opportunity to progress through to the semi-finals. With one final game against St Augustine’s Kyabram, Vermont SC started with a bang, collecting 6 shots in the first 2 ends. Our opposition would not go down without a fight, with 2 current Victorian Under 18 champions amongst their ranks. With some incredibly consistent and clutch bowling from our students, Vermont SC held on to win 12-6.   The semi-finals loomed as Vermont SC finished top of their section. With a comfortable win against Rutherglen HS 11-5, Jake and the Jacks progressed through to the Grand Final feeling extremely confident and in terrific spirits. An early lead against Trinity College Colac held us in good stead, however the opposition proved superior, finishing with a humble 6-12 loss.  An incredible effort from our 3 Junior students to make the State Grand Final and have only been bowling for 12 months or less. Special shout out to Jake H for competing as a Year 7 student and Jack H for having an incredible tournament in his first Sports event for the College.

EMR/STATE DIVING

Mr Pinder had the pleasure of taking our diving team in 2022 and now again in 2023 with Ms D’Arcy. It was very heartening to see we had a larger squad this year and some fresh new faces giving diving a crack. The diving clinic at the start of the day is a great opportunity for our divers to get feedback from accredited diving coaches who help them select the dives which give them the best opportunity at success. It is always fantastic to see a significant improvement in our teams’ performance even within this short period of time. Our team did very well securing places in the state finals for the eastern metropolitan region. A special shout out to Yana T and Emily W for making it through to the state finals. Thank you to the entire team for staying back as a team, without any complaints! We hope to see many more faces competing next year. You don’t need to be an experienced diver to compete!

DIVISION CROSS COUNTRY

It was a good day to be a duck, and a great day to be a VSC Cross Country Runner. On Tuesday the 9th of May, 115 of Vermont’s finest runners competed at the Waverley Division Cross Country event at Norton’s Park in Wantirna. Melbourne brought plenty of drizzle, which made the track wet underfoot, and progressively muddier as the day progressed. There were many welcomed breaks of sun throughout the day, in addition to our many stars on the track.

Vermont was successful in retaining the Grand Aggregate shield, winning the day with a total of 292 points, edging out Mount Waverley by a mere 16 points. Our juniors were successful in winning the junior shield whilst our intermediates placed 2nd by a single point, and our seniors also placing 2nd by a 21-point margin. A fantastic team effort, well done to each and every student who competed on the day!

SENIOR ROUND ROBIN

Boys Football

The senior boys football team had a strong day out at Wellington Reserve, playing pool matches against Mt Waverley, Highvale and the wind Team Vermont came out on top. It was great to see the team back out there with level heads and high hopes to go as far as possible. EMR quarter finals are on Tuesday the 11th of July. We hope to see the return of some of the injured cavalry to bolster what is already an elite team in the making.

Girls Netball

On Friday May 5th, 18 senior girls excitedly turned up at school ready to play several games of netball and represent Vermont Secondary College. I had the privilege of coaching the teams on the day.

This was the girls’ final chance to play for the school as many of the students were now in Year 12 and so the competition had even more significance. Many of the girls in the school team first tried out for school netball 6 years earlier as small year 7’s eager to play netball. They had been together for a long time and enjoyed the once-a-year experience.

The competition began and throughout the day we competed against Glen Waverley, Highvale and Mount Waverley Secondary Colleges. Our A and B teams played so well and we won all matches on the day. Thanks to my scorer Charli P and all girls who participated on the day. All the best for the next division. Chelsea and Annie would be proud of you all.

The A team will now direct their focus toward the EMR Netball Finals to be held on the 4th of August at Waverley Netball Centre. Well done to all involved.

Boys Soccer

Senior Boys Soccer – Friday 5th May 2023

Another great day for the Senior Boys to show what a great bunch of lads they are and how proud they are to wear the black, red and blue of Vermont!

Another challenging tournament this year but the boys showed great teamwork, support for each other, great resilience, and drive!!

We always knew the first match against Mount Waverley would be the biggest test and the team came so close to a nil-nil draw but we were undone in the end and lost 2-0.

However, the boys marched on and dusted themselves down for the remaining two matches against Highvale and Glen Waverley but unfortunately, once again the efforts from the first match had got the better of us and we lost out against these teams too.

Led by Captain Marvel Aidin – his team talks and tactics were well communicated and it was great to see the team gel on the day!! They’d only been formed two days prior but it was great to see the Yr12s enjoy their final outing for VSC with a few new faces from last year in the squad.

Good luck to the year 12s in their VCE and we look forward to them coming down from their lectures next year at Monash to support next year’s Senior team!!

A big thank you to all from Mr Murray!

Boys Badminton

Whilst the boy’s badminton team didn’t experience too many wins in our day out, playing against very experienced opposition in Glen Waverley and Highvale, there were some individual highlights. Congratulations to Lucas K who was able to pull off a stunning individual singles victory against the second rank player from Mount Waverley. In addition, there were some great efforts from players such as Rhoan D and Andrew W, who despite limited experience, put in great efforts on the court.

Girls Badminton

Congratulations to Ashley N, Christine N, Heidi M and Lily F from the A Team who scored one draw in their round robin. Considering the talent at the other schools, this was very impressive. Much like the boys, they came up against very experienced opposition but still managed to put in valiant efforts and tried their hardest. In addition, special recognition to Nicole Z, Ebony A, Serene C, Nishita A and Alisha R in our B Team who, with limited experience still gave their best efforts on the court.

1500M RESCHEDULE

Thank you to the students who competed at the 1500m reschedule event on Wednesday. It was a cracking day on the track which saw many PBs fall, and some very strong performances in one of the most gruelling track events. The full athletics team will be published in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for training dates!
