Economics Budget Party

With high inflation and global economic uncertainty, the attention of many Australians has been focused on whether the RBA will increase the cash rate at its monthly meeting. So understandably, attention turned to the 2023-24 Federal Budget in early May, with plenty of discussion as to whether this would further stoke inflation.

In Unit 3/4 Economics, we’ve been studying the Australian economy, focusing largely on the goals the Federal Government aims to achieve, including strong and sustainable economic growth, full employment and low and stable inflation.

Students were excited to find party bags at their desks the following lesson, complete with party hats, budget cartoons, popcorn and budget bingo cards. We watched Jim Chalmers’ budget speech in party hats, marking off key words and policies on our bingo cards as we went. This year there was lots of mention of cost-of-living, JobSeeker, defence and Medicare. Even a small surplus, a concept that was unthinkable two years ago.

A fun way for the two classes of Eco students to examine another interesting Federal Budget.
