Physical Education Focus

It has been a very busy couple of weeks in PE with students starting new units of work with the new term.

The Foundation, Grade One and Grade Two students will spend term 2 focusing on the Fundamental Movement Skills of throwing and catching. Students have spent the start of the term focusing on their underarm throws, making sure they are stepping forward with the correct foot when they throw. In the coming weeks they will be focussing on overarm throws to ensure they have the correct stance throwing big powerful throws. The end of the term's focus will be on small object catching, in particular tracking and moving to the object.

The Grade 3-6 students concluded term one by completing their House Cross Country laps. Congratulations and well done to all students who participated in this event. More laps were run this year than in any previous year, great work. This leaves term two free to focus on athletics in preparation for our schools House Athletics Day, early in term 3. Students have already started looking at sprinting technique and running on the front of their feet. Over the coming weeks they will be learning and practising the correct techniques for Hurdles, Shot Putt, Discus and High Jump.

Sports Report

The Grade 6 students finally got the chance to participate in their first inter school Sports Gala Day. This was the summer Sports Gala Day and even though it took place on a chilli Autumn Day it did nothing to diminish the exciting of the day. The students represent Fairfield Primary School extremely well at this event and I am extremely proud of the way they trained and competed on day. The next winter Sports Gala Day will be held on Tuesday 6 June and will be at CT Barling Reserve and the Darebin Community Sporting Stadium on Plenty Road.

As mentioned in the PE report congratulations to all students who completed lap(s) in the school’s cross country event, the final scores are close. From this event 45 students were selected to represent Fairfield Primary School at the Northcote District Cross Country Carnival, which took place last Friday at Bundoora Park, well done to all those children who compete, 19 of them have qualified for the Division Cross Country which will also be held at Bundoora Park on Thursday 1 June 10am – 12:30pm. Best of luck to all students who are competing, make sure to bring plenty of warm clothes as it will most likely be cold and a little wet, ideal cross country weather.
