Welcome to our second newsletter for Term 1, 2022. The last couple of weeks have been super busy and productive in our P-3 Art Studios. We started the term discussing the importance of an Essential Agreement in the Art rooms. We unpacked the idea of this agreement with each class and they contributed ideas that linked our behaviour and expectations to the PYP Learner Profiles. The students were able to add their voice to the agreement which will soon be displayed for all to review.
We followed this up with unpacking our theme for our mini school project: We all have a place in the Saltwater P-9 learning community. Students unpacked this statement and discussed the fact that we all look different, have different backgrounds and speak different languages however we all fit into the Saltwater
P-9 community. Students were then provided with a shape made of board or paper upon which they designed different lines and infilled the shape with the three primary colours.
Students were learning about several Elements of Art through this project: Line and Colour as well as combining the use of literacy skills (following the procedure on the board) and numeracy skills (discussing the difference between geometric and organic shapes). We looked at the different lines we can use in Art as well as the names for each line in Spanish. Below is an image of the lines we looked at so that students can practise their skills and remember the Spanish names for each line.
Students in the years Four to Seven high school art room have started this year by creating their essential agreements in art class for the year ahead. The essential agreement is an IB document and agreement that enables students to be stakeholders in their learning and personal development at an IB school. Students unpacked the IB learner profiles and IB attitudes and values and discussed how they are relevant in the area of Visual Arts. They worked in groups discussing what they felt was important to make our new high school art room a positive, successful and creative space to work in and how they can all reach their art goals for 2022. Each student created specific measurable goals for themselves and explored strategies that they could use to achieve their goals and be successful as developing artists.
They have been communicators, thinkers and have been knowledgeable as they have unpacked what is essential for the Year Four to Seven Art program to succeed in 2022 and also presented their findings to their class. Students have also worked on their thinking and inquiry skills as they explored Ms Nishani's School Box Art page to view their pre- work as they consolidate what they have already learnt in art class. This will help to prepare them for the next art lesson where they be aware of what we are learning for that week. They do this as they are principled and knowledgeable as they develop and consolidate their art theory and history skills. I look forward to teaching all your lovely children this year and have an open door of communication, where you can contact me to discuss your child's progress and where we can work together to help your child grow, succeed and develop their personal and interpersonal skills in their school life here at Saltwater College and in the Visual Arts program.
Kind regards,
Ms. Nishani.
