Dear Year Two families,
Wow! What a wonderful week we’ve had and an exciting start to 2022. Students have been extremely positive and it is fantastic to watch them settling into Year Two seamlessly.
This week the Year Two’s continued creating their Essential Agreements, using the Learner Profile Attributes to guide the discussions in the classroom. Classes will continue working on this throughout the next few weeks and we can’t wait to share them with families once they are complete.
In Reading this week, students have been busy discussing the expectations for independent reading, selecting a class novel and organising classroom libraries. An essential part of the ‘First 20 Days’ program, is to create an organised learning environment allowing students to feel confident maneuvering around the classroom. To encourage a sense of ownership, the Year Two’s explored the books within their library and worked together to find similarities between books. Labels were then created to categorise these books and are now used to keep libraries neat and tidy.
This week in Writing, the Year Two’s began planting ‘seeds’ in their Writer’s Notebook and using the ideas to inspire their writing pieces. Students began working towards improving their writing stamina and seeking to write for a longer period of time, in comparison to last year. It was wonderful to see the Year Two’s being risk-takers and challenging themselves to write longer and more detailed texts.
In Maths this week, students established what Maths looks like, sounds like and feels like in their class. In collaboration with the Year Two teachers, classes began setting the expectations around what is the students’ role and the teacher’s role during Maths lessons. We started to dive into the ‘Launch, Explore, Discuss’ model, exploring different strategies to solve problems using the Maths resources and utilising strategies such as ‘RUCSAC’ when problem-solving.
Throughout this week, the Year Two’s have also been participating in a range of Wellbeing activities to encourage cooperation amongst new classmates and self-awareness of our own choices. We have been learning about how to solve problems using the ‘Wheel of Choice’ and learning different strategies to cope with challenges students may encounter. The Year Two’s have been knowledgeable communicators, by using their classroom ‘Zones of Regulation’ door to express how they are feeling throughout the day.
