Dear Year One families and guardians,
What a fantastic two weeks we have had! It has been a wonderful start to 2022 and we are looking forward to what the rest of the year holds.
This week we have continued creating routines and establishing classroom expectations through Saltwater’s, ‘Learning to Learn’ program. We have begun working on creating our Essential Agreements by exploring the different Learner Profile Attributes and what this means and looks like to the students. This is something we will be continuing to investigate in the coming weeks.
Reading
During Reading this week, we have discussed the expectations for independent reading and the importance of being independent, how to identify a 'just right book' and how we can organise our classroom libraries to not only keep our library tidy, but help us find books that interest the students more easily. By encouraging students to take an active part in these discussions and providing them with strategies, we hope to encourage the students to develop more independence, confidence and ownership of their classroom environment.
Writing
For Writing this week we have focussed on getting our Writer's Notebooks set up. We have been exploring their personal interests, information about themselves and their families as well as other interesting 'seeds' they can use to stimulate their thinking. Students have been encouraged to develop their confidence in being risk-takers by using their understanding of letter/sound patterns and blends to stretch out unfamiliar words when writing , as well as working towards improving their writing stamina.
Maths
Maths this week has focussed on what Maths looks like, sounds like and feels like in the classroom. The students have had the opportunity to explore the different maths resources in their classroom and how these hands on materials can be used to support them during maths lessons. We have been working with our classes to model ways in which numbers can be made, encouraging them to use materials as they work. The classes have also been discussing the 'RUCSAC' strategy to help with problem-solving worded problems.
Reminders
* In the Primary years, school begins at 8:30am, with continuous entry from 8:20am.
* In Term One, it is required that all students wear their hats during recess and lunch. We kindly remind students to remember their hats.
* Please ensure iPads are sent to school fully charged each day.
* If you have not done so already, please remember to bring in students' stationery packs and Take Home Reader satchels.
Kind regards,
The Year One Team
