PRINCIPAL REPORT

From the College Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, Friends, Staff and Students,

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our returning and new students and their families, as well as new staff. In welcoming you to the school, I wanted to take the opportunity of bringing some information to the forefront of your thinking at the outset of the year.

We are a community that strives every day to base our behaviours on our values. In light of the news reporting over recent days about religious and other discrimination, I wanted to expound a little on our first College value which is Respect.

We say that at Brighton we live the value of Respect by doing these things:

  • We treat others as we would like to be treated
  • We take pride and respect in ourselves and our environment
  • We accept and celebrate difference and diversity

In particular, in respect to the third point, the school has a long history of accepting all children.

We do not tolerate discrimination, bigotry or vilification of any type. We don’t accept, “I was only joking” or “I didn’t mean it” as excuses when words are used to hurt people because of who they are.  Everyone has a voice and deserves to be seen and heard in an environment where we as school respect each other and treat each other as such.

It is a fabulous privilege to lead a school community that overwhelming lives by these values. To walk in our yard is to see a kaleidoscope of backgrounds, genders (on non-genders) faiths, and abilities that was unknown when I first went to school. This is the environment we strive for and I am thankful to everyone for supporting us in this goal.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Minack

Principal
