Relationships

"I show each child as they walk into school, no matter what happened the day before, that they are welcome, respected and safe." Yarrabah staff member

The upper secondary students have been writing letters to their remote learning friends as a way to stay connected to their classmates.  Students wrote a letter each, and then walked to Mordialloc to the Post Office, where they  got stamps and posted the letters.

Explicitness

A systematic method of teaching with emphasis on proceeding in small steps, checking for understanding and achieving active and successful participation by all students.

At Yarrabah students across the school are taught explicitly through the I do, we do, you do model.  I do: the teacher models and shows what is expected.  We do: students work together on the activity, while the teacher guides, prompts and models.  You do: the student works independently to practice the new skill.

Ability

We all have ability, we just use our ability in different ways.

At Yarrabah we want every child to be fully immersed in the school experience.  We use assessments, observations and feedback to inform out student's individual learning program (ILP).  We then teach to our students strengths and ability through differentiated instruction and making adaptations and adjustments where needed so that all students can access the curriculum.

Learning for life

Self awareness, self regulation, resilience, interpersonal relationships, problem solving, decision making, self advocacy and skills that promote independence.

learning for life is more than just learning basic life skills such as dressing and cleaning up.  At Yarrabah students are taught the skills they will need when they leave school and venture out into the community at large.  Our therapy team and staff have worked together to develop programs that develop and cultivate skills for life.  Programs include: Alert, Social Safety, Life Skills, Work Skills, Pathways and Travel Ed and Community Access to name a few.
