Wellbeing Supports, Services & Inspiration

Dear parents and carers,

How are you travelling? Going in and out of lockdown is so unnatural and unsettling. Prior to 2020 having our kids go to school, booking catch ups, dinners, events, and appointments was quite normal with a lot more certainty. One good thing is that students at Yarrabah can come to school to connect with their teachers, and other students, and can continue to learn. The staff are here to support you and your children. Please reach out if you need support or resources as we navigate another tricky year.

Taking Care of yourself

It is crucial for parents and caregivers to take care of themselves. This week I did a survey and a question had me thinking about my priorities. What hobbies do I have in my life that I develop? I can easily respond with I don’t have time, my kids are a handful, I haven’t got any time for me, you don’t know what’s on my plate. I totally appreciate that working remotely and having kids doing remote learning, preparing for each day with the load of domestic duties, appointments and schedules are demanding and arduous. I know that when I prioritise carving time for me that I benefit with increased energy levels as my serotonin levels are positively boosted having a better impact on my mood.

Research has shown that Serotonin levels can effect the brain, regulating moods, digestion and appetite.

What can you do to increase your Serotonin levels?

Exercise- This can be an outside or inside. Vitamin D is great to increase serotonin levels.

Exercise you might enjoy can include online pilates, aerobics, weights, an outside walk, run, bike ride alone or with a friend. (as per restriction guide lines) Regular exercise has been proven to boost serotonin levels. It assists in managing depression and improving cardiovascular health, strength and endurance

Food- vitamin B6, Vitamin D, Omega 3 . Foods that are rich in these nutrients include:  legumes (such as kidney beans), pulses (such as chickpeas), eggs, kale and spinach and other leafy greens, nuts and seeds and oily fatty fish such as tuna or sardines.
